Ford GT is back

Just in case you had not heard the rumors, the GT is back.

We dont have much detail on specs yet but this looks interesting!

2003 BMW e39 M5  [0.00]

Just read in the Detroit Free Press that it will be a 3.5 liter twin turbo. No V8. :thumb down

Beautiful looking car, though.

It's really beautyful the only thing that just don't want to get in my head, why all that engine down sizing ?
When you buy an Ford GT, you are not looking to beat hyundai family wagon MPG's.
I really don't get it...

Ford is using this 600hp TTV6 in other race applications with great effect. Lets see what the final outcome looks like first.

I for one wasn't a fan of the 5.4L S/C motor in the previous GT. I want something that revved higher. It would have been nice to see the 5.2LFPC motor in that thing S/Cd though.

Because turbos add more power over normally aspirated engines. I doubt they were going for fuel economy but the added performance from such an engine is a key factor. Unlike the supercharger in the previous Ford GT, turbos are more efficient and make more power.

Yeah but I think what most people are wondering is why a 6cyl turbo and not of an 8cyl turbo!?

b/c it's 2015 and big power has been made with small displacement and turbos for a longggg time. Although this car is a niche car and the market would probaly had liked a V8 car and not cared about economy of any sort this seems more of a marketing stint to tout the eco boost motors and they are the new ford motor. They use it in everything and it has been making really good power.

Previous gen. Ford GT cars have doubled in value already. Crazy.

Every manufacturer is going with small displacement turbo motors due to the emissions and efficiency requirements that each mfg is subject to, to meet some pretty insane targets in the next 5-10-15 years. Plus there is a huge push to get engines <4.0L.

McLaren has a 3.8L TT V8, Ferrari's replacing their 4.5L NA V8 with a <4L V8 and Ford already has won the 24 Hours of Daytona & 12 Hours of Sebring with their 3.5L TT V6 that is going into the GT.

There's no need for that large a motor given their power requirements. Also, a lot of places outside the US tax cars on displacement and emissions. That makes large engine cars a lot more expensive.

I'm sure there's a lot of reasons for their decision. Some of it probably has to do with the fact they already have this engine. This way they don't need to create a bespoke engine and can save some costs.

Exactly this is already a race winning proven engine.

Because most people don't follow racing and don't realize how seriously Ford has been racing this powerplant.

Just found some Internet numbers of the new Ford GT....
1,400 kg
0-100 km/u in 3 sec.
+ 600 HP
Topspeed + 200 mph !
Seen how it's built ? This car will fly through the corners !
Ferrari killer ?

Yeah it makes sense, but on the other hand, if I were to look at buying an exotic, this engine could be a deal breaker! I guess Ford prefer to sell more F-150 by putting the same engine as this GT in it then selling more GT by giving it a bespoke engine!!

Anyway, this car looks amazing and I'm sure it wont dissapoint, but a V8 is a V8, specially in an american sport car, you want that big engine!!

Sennas 1988 Championship-winning Mclaren MP4/4 had a 1.5L turbo V6 Honda engine.

Nelson Piquet's 1987 Championship winning Williams FW11 had a 1.5L turbo V6 Honda engine.

The MP4/2 & 2B took Niki Lauda to a 1984 World Championship and Alain Prost to the '85 & '86 World Championships using a 1.5L Tag-Porsche turbo V6.

...and Audi has a turbo hybrid V6 in their LMP1 R18 e-tron. Nothing wrong with turbo V6s...

.....until you start them up and listen to them. There is more to driving then just getting the most performance out of them or posing for your neighbors. A high end performance car should have the bark to match its bite. No V6 sounds as good as a V8. None.

Jalopnik is now reporting Ford will going racing with the new GT sometime this season, in Tudor GTLM.

Billy, you in line for one of the seats?

There are some great sounding six cylinder cars. There are some great sounding 4 cylinder cars as well. They sound different for sure, but doesn't make it better or worse.

The first time I heard a Fiat 500 Abarth, I swore it was an Italian V8, with its roar and the crackle on the overrun, but I turned around and saw a small 4 cylinder coupe.

Disagree. Cayman GTS with sport exhaust sounds phenomenal
