Depending on the "quality" (i.e.: enclosed trailer, open transport, etc) your price can vary significantly.
I just shipped a 2003 BMW 325ci to my cousin in Chicago from New Jersey. It only cost me $500. It was an open transport and they came to my house to get it. I used Montway Auto Transport. They are actually located in Illinois. All the others I've researched are ~$1000 which was too much in my opinion. Montway was very good in my experience with them. Driver was friendly and documented EVERY SINGLE item on the car including existing scratches, paint chips, dents, etc. Even looked over the interior and documented that too. I had to pay $150 initially and the pickup person had to pay the remaining $350. Car arrived in 1.5 days.

I used DAS (www.dependableautoshippers.com) to ship my E36 M3 from Arizona to NJ about 8 years ago... Total cost was just over $1,500. The car was top loaded in an enclosed trailer with expedited shipping and door to door pickup/delivery. Only took 5 days.

I used high end transport on recommendation from Ryan @ Steve Thomas BMW. Enclosed trailer from Orange County to New Jersey - great service. The only thing I didn't like was that they had a flat-bed pick up your car then actually load it at their terminal. anyway, car came out fine.
