Need help getting a job in silicon valley or high tech industry

Hey fellow m3 drivers,

Long story short, I've been on the job hunt since last June and have had no luck at all. It's very depressing as I worked real hard to graduate from school.

Abit of a background on myself, I graduated from Cal Poly Pomona in June 2011 as the valedictorian of both the college of engineering and the electrical engineering department specializing in digital signal processing and communications. I worked hard but somehow, that seems to have had the opposite effect? I thought that would help me find a job but my friends who were drinking beer and partying while I was working hard have gotten jobs through connections.

Internships helped them alot but I wasn't able to get any during my studies because I was an international student. I am now a proper permanent resident of the US and can work for any company but having no work experience looks bad on my resume.

I'd appreciate it if anyone in the high tech industry, especially in the bay area could lend me a hand. I'm willing to work hard to earn my points, I just need a field to play in.

I'm trying to stay positive, but this is really discouraging. Thanks for taking the time to read my rant.

Unfortunately not. I'm more of a hardware person being an EE. MATLAB and C++.

Long term but an electrical engineering job. I want to learn.

Well, the thing about working hard in school is, lots of hot shots w/ straight A's and even ones who get Ph.D wind up doing research and/or developments.

But, that research/development dept is managed by people who got B's in school [you know, the more-sociable guys (who drank beer & partied) w/ some leadership abilities - which is to say, they're good at manipulating others (which is sometimes called management skills)].

And, the whole company is owned by people who got C's.

And, the kicker is, people who got D's get university buildings named after them (not all, of course).

The moral of the story is, education is overrated. In the age of Microsoft, Apple, Google, Facebook, etc, it's not what it was in our parents' generations.

Anyhow, going to work for others is ok for now. Eventually, you'd want to run your own business.

In this economy, head hunters, recruiters, placement companies, etc, probably have very large stacks of resumes already.

In light of your major, how about looking overseas where Intel, AMD, Broadcom, Cisco, etc, are doing design & manufacturing (China, Thailand, etc)? You'll make less overseas but living expenses are low there, but most importantly, talk about experience!

The only wisdom I can impart is that it's all about who you know. A great resource is old classmates.

I have a contact at 20th Century Fox, and I know they are hiring. If you check their website for a position that interests you, let me know and I'll put you in touch with my contact. He can get your name up to the top of the applicant pile

Uhm, lets say that admission to the United States wasn't exactly cheap. I'd prefer not to talk about it. lol

Just supposing... if you landed a job at Intel China, for example, and did well over next 5 to 10 years, there are plenty of previous cases wherein the company relocates the employee to the States and handles all immigrations/legal filings, etc. Just saying.
