I drove an S5 a couple weeks ago....compared to my 335, I'd take the S5 in a heartbeat.

I had a CLK55 AMG before this and I considered the S5 and 335i as possible replacements.

I drove the S5 a few times and I loved it (especially the sound and interior) but it reminded me too much of the AMG and I wanted something different alas it is the 335ci for now. It also helps that the 335ci is cheaper

Maybe next time it'll be an Audi (RS5??) - but it will be a while before I get another Benz, which will hopefully be a CL-class coupe

Firstly, either you have a very short memory or are very young indeed, to think that it's amazing engineering skill and enlightenment to put a 6 cylinder Bi-turbo engine in a mid-sized car, Audi did this years ago in the old S4 and RS4.

Secondly, the S5 and 335i posted identical times on the longest most demanding race tracks in the world (the ring), the S5 was both quicker and slower (depending on tyre choice) on the Hockenhiem course against the 335i but you choose to make reference to a TV programme (Fifthgear) for your bases in the remark that the S5 in slower than the 335i. Wake up and smell the rose.

The S5 as you refer is 'bling' with a 'shitty drive', you clearly haven't driven the S5 because if you had you would know it an enjoyable drive with an exciting engine note that is more than capable of matching anything that the 335i can do. It is very ill-informed opinion to think that BMW are somehow superior to it's other German competitors, they are all very skill engineering companies. Best leave Motorsport out of the argument because this is on area where BMW are found wanting against either Mercedes or Audi, I ask you, in the nineteen thirties what were BMW making when both Mercedes and Audi where building 400km/h machines to race on the roads.

This might sound like I don't appreciate BMWs or the engineering skills but that is not the case, I think what they are currently doing is brilliant but wouldn't rate any more incredible than any of the others.

P.S.
Check the production cycle of both Audi and Mercedes and you will see little difference between them and BMW in this respect.
my friend has an old s4 and i've worked on his bi-turbo engine - i know this has been done before. but for a company with a foundation known to build N/A motors, going turbo i think is a big step. I am one of those lucky fellas that get to test drive new production vehicles before its unveiling at mosport international raceway. I drove the s5 1.5 months ago - and these like many others were my opinions on the car. I may not know the whole history of audi manufacturing, but i've worked and raced many cars.

btw - in my post i didn't make reference to fifthgear...i said from what i've seen the bmw out of ten times would come out on top by a fraction (kinda sad with a v8 and "legendry quattro"). THIS WAS DONE ON MOSPORT, i saw it with my own eyes and many other wel respected drivers from bmw and porsche driving school. depending on the track, tires, driver and what not either car would come out on top. but knowing that the 335i is lighter and more agile i would put my money on the 335i on the track.

you can say whatever you want. its your opionions vs mine. audi is a glorified vw. if you like the sounds of a v8 than that's good for you. I would rather have something with SAME performance figures through efficient engineering and i'll save money on gas. I rather have something different than something that sounds like an american v8.

i believe they were making airplanes...you know the ones that fly? don't think that a company that has been around for longer means they can make better products. im a person to give credit for experience and market presence.......but planes are faster than cars that go 400km/h? so if you ask me, i think bmws were making machines faster than 400kmh that were literrly flying by those of mercedes and audis. what makes bmw unique is their aeronotical heritage.

don't start your post by "please don't take it personal", and then call me a child that doesn't know what he's talking about with those stupid faces you were making. this is a forum where ppl share their experiences and opinions. unfortunately its post like yours that start things and you call me young? if you are 35+ and got offended by my post then what does that say about yourself? read my post closer next time, i made it clear that it was my own opinion. please make your posts without relations to mine or anyone else. just state your opinion in a nautral manner. im sure a 24 yr old should have to tell you that....

it felt slower than 335 even at lower speeds. I did one hard acceleration off the light at about 4500 rpm and it still didnt feel as fast. It felt very heavy but you can feel it pulling at every wheel.

The steering is also speed adaptive but i did not notice much difference ... only at stnad still when you try to turn it hard you can feel the pressure increase ... as far as running our ot boost after 5000 .. maybe i expressed my self to extreme ... it is not as if the car completely looses the power after 5000 rpm, it just feels as if it looses a little compared to the mid range

BMW started making motorcycles and then moved into Aeroplane engines when the wars started, their input into the second world war is well documented. But BMW's history in motorsport is very limited in comparison to the other three (Audi, Mercedes and Porsche), it fact they only got serious in the late sixties.

I am at a lost as to how I have insulted you, saying you were either too young or didn't remember the B5 S4 is hardly an insult. Also reminding you that both cars posted identical times on the ring and the S5 being both quicker and slower on Hockenhiem depending on tyre choice is a fact, nothing more. Also to class the S5 as bling and a shitty drive was surely asking for the kind of reply I gave you. After driving numerous cars from Porsche, BMW, Ferrari, etc and also being hand with a car I know that the S5 is not a shitty drive, far from it, the car is more than an equal to the 335i in performance and handling, in fact in most situations the S5 will walk away for the 335i, the only advantage the 335i might have is on a bone dry surface and as this has been proven to be only fractional at best. Also the S5 has something to offer that the 335i can't and that is an engine note and an air of luxury and grandness that can only come from with a big V8 engine.

This is not to knock the 335i, it's a great machine and I do agree that giving it the smaller engine with turbos gives it an economical advantage and a tuning advantage as well, but because of this it will never be regarded as big league, that's down to using a small power unit.

well coz u have a E90, it's so ugly you'd take anything over it
jk

well, i wouldnt quite agree. i wasnt impressed by the S5 except for interior, exterior, and gadgets. they are far superior to 335's. but at the end of the day driving is the deal breaker. i didnt like how the tranny pulls you backwards when you depress the clutch, didnt like acceleration, didnt like the handling one bit.

but then again my 335 was chipped, upgraded suspension (stiff-set sway bars + coilovers)
