Is this a scam???

I have my 09 M3 for sale and just received this e-mail. Sounds like a scam to me

Thanks for the response to my text. I am a British Soldier currently
deployed with the 1st Armoured Division in Afghanistan and out here it is
difficult accessing a phone regularly due to the nature of my profession, so
I might not be able to get through to you on phone. I best communicate here
via the internet. I am fine with the price and want to purchase it from you.
In regards to payments, i am keen on making this purchase immediately and
would like to make payments to you ASAP via pay pal as I can’t go to my bank
to get the money wired to you. Pay pal is a safe and secure medium to
receive and make payments online without divulging too much personal
information, if you have an account already do get back to me with it so I
can go on to make an instant payment to you and if you don’t you can go to
pay pal company website to set up an account. It is linked with your bank
account thereby making funds accessible as soon as you receive payments. I
will also arrange for pick up and delivery to Malaysia with a freight
company and the freight company will handle all paper works regarding the
sale and transfer of title. Looking forward to read from you soonest.

It's weird that he explains what paypal is, and anybody not wanting to talk on the phone is sketching at best. And why does the car need to go to Malaysia? Its not in his supposed home (GB) nor where he is supposedly currently located.

Just in case you can reply, I will send the car as soon as I receive the payment in my paypal account. So many scams out there though, where is your car listed? I've tried to sell a couple cars on craigs list after having luck getting rid of one of them a couple years ago, but ever since its just scam after scam and all sorts of other crap.

The fact you even ask concerns me. Does this look like Grammar from a British Soldier?

cold be legit, you're the one with the car at the end of the day, and if no money is paid, then no car is delivered, simple as that.

I wouldn't give him your address or anything, just give him your paypal address and tell him, if no money then no car. 100% of the money has to be delivered before a tow truck can come and pick it up.

only weird thing is, why a british guy want a US car?

If you receive the money in paypal first and make sure the money is cleared, I think it will be okay. Although it is pretty sketchy!

I'd say yes, it is. When I sold my e46 in December, I got an email quite similar to this one. In mine, the military guy was buying it for his dad as a Christmas present. In fact, I got it literally seconds after I placed the ad in Auto Trader. As much as I wanted to believe it, I ignored it completely, as I started getting other offers, but I kept wondering where the scam was if I simply had to give him my PayPal info. I mean, all he could do is give me money, right?

I understand that is exactly right. Apparently the scam is to deposit something way short of asking price, claim that was the agreed to deal, and then threaten to sue you (in their place of the world) for fraud if you don't produce the car for the lesser price. Puts you in a spot where you have settle for some dollar amount to make it all go away.

You've heard if it's too good to be true, it probably isn't? I'd apply it in this case.

Good luck with the sale.

I'm wasting his time e-mailing him. Asking questions about his unit and where he is stationed at in Afghanistan.

Do not give him your paypal. Waste his time demanding his bank information, so that you can "receive" his payment. It'll piss him off.

Scammers hate when someone tries to cheat them in the middle of their scamming operation. Give him a taste of his own medicine.

Interesting. Obviously this is a scam, but you are the first to suggest how it might actually work. I'm not sure I completely buy that this would be worth the hassle for the scammer though. After all, what if you just bolt, shut off your PP account and take his deposit? Seems like a pretty precarious way to try and pull a scam to me.

I am wondering if there is not something more to this that involves him somehow getting ahold of your paypal account. Just a thought.

Bad idea. But I wonder if you can give him someone else's who doesn't care about their account. Maybe set up a shill account, and as soon as he pays (if he does - which I am skeptical of) you shut off the account or just remove the link to the bank account that backs it.
