To be fair the 'specials' are differentiated (paint, stripped out or not etc). But yes, it is a tried & true way to extract $ / EUROs etc and also build some cachet.

'Tis a business, after all. Some of these margins are returned in the form of R&D to make future Bimmers 'better'

Ugh gag me.

There's a Lime Rock (Orange) Edition sitting at Sterling BMW by me. They are asking 15k markup on top of its already sky-high sticker price. It didn't look anything even remotely close to special just like this DTM OMG Edition. Wow it had a sticker of the outline of a track on the window! How about if you aren't a fool... you pay 5k for an Exclusive color like Orange or Matte whatever, get it in 6MT, and actually have a car that will be worth collecting one day.

Totally agree. I was emailed by my local dealer re the LR Ed. I was there this week to pick up my M3 after some work and I thought: for this kind of money you can get into a 911!

this man raced for BMW after a 20 year hiatus from the DTM series. I believe they came out with this limited edition car to show their appreciation for what he has done for the company. At least show some love for him.

Did you read the description of the package? It's all cosmetic. No performance changes.

I know, I fully read it. For now it's only cosmetic changes, but they said more info will be released in the coming weeks. Hopefully this means some performance upgrades will be revealed. I guess time will tell.

Only funny part of this is that my bmw has 4 different "limited edition" BMW M3s. They have a laguna seca blue M3, a orange limerock M3, some frozen silver m3 and a frozen grey.

Bmw never has performance upgrades on the M3, its always cosmetic. Just get a black vinyl wrap and make up some limited name. Guess that makes all of my modded cars 1 of 1

The DTM car has nothing to do with the actual M3 chassis. To me it feels like an insult to think they use that to sell production cars. Talk about cheapening the brand.

Why purchase a special edition - Lime Rock in my case?

Of the new M3's available close by - around 10 cars - this one looked the best in my eyes.

Exhaust, orange paint, black wheels, black grilles, nav, sound + no sunroof
was as close as I could get option-wise w/o having to wait.

The performance of DCT sealed the deal after a test drive!

Is the car going to be worth more? Probably not. I bought the car to drive, not to sell.

I do like the exclusivity of the 200 total + not seeing many fire orange BMW's.
The DTM Edition would not have been in the running looks wise for me.

Was a member of the NSXCA (NSX Club of America) + looking forward to meeting other owners & learning more about the M3.
For me it's another benefit of ownership.

I like it. I think its cool they did a DTM edition. After the hiatus, coming back to smoke the competition, and all in a "E92" DTM car. Its cool. The race was fun, and IF I was currently in the market for an E92, Id be down for getting this one. Why not? Its the best of the special editions in my opinion. Of course it would be cool if they SC'd it or weight reduction or whatever, but who cares. Its a cool looking tribute. Id rock it. Hell yea...

Im having fun getting glares from the Merc & Audi DTM fans as it is already... would love it in this. Hm, maybe Ill get a vinyl wrap in the DTM theme... Hmm...
