ha! I was just thinking the same thing this morning driving in to work.

I have the floor lid/liner out and realized how much more of the road I can hear and it sounds a lot like those stripper caged cars. (I drove with the rear seats folded down) I also realized that floor liner was some integral part of "bolting" the electronics in the trunk. Without the floor, the machines were rattling like crazy in there.

back on topic...

I took the floor lid/liner out and scrubbed it again. I finally found the remaining source of the odor. On the edge of this panel, the liquid spilled over and crusted up on the edge and that's why no amount of scrubbing in the plastic hold or the carpet itself was removing the odor last few days.

I also check the battery compartment, and it passed the sniff test. Overall, every thing pass the sniff test today, except for that floor liner's edge, which I would scrub down a few time this week.

To prevent this in the future, I'd suggest this: http://www.amazon.com/BMW-Series-Gen...dp/B000RFEJG4/

I have the normal carpeted "M" mat, but I keep this for those moments when I have to carry stuff that may leak. Given the time you've spent so far, the $ investment is very, very minimal.

thanks for the suggestion. I'll buy the rubber trunk mat after this incident.

today is day 7 after the ordeal, and I'm happy to report all the smell is gone. I installed the floor in yesterday. The car sat in the sun all day at work, and after work, my wife's friend got in for a ride, and I kid you not, the FIRST thing she said was, "wow, still got new car smell".

Try a portable ozone generator (corona discharge type) it you can get a hold of one on loan or hire. This will do the trick
