Father my have ruined my m3 ?
Hey guys my father decided to try and help me out since i have a busy schedule and didnt tell me, But he filled my E90 M3 with 5W-40... Which is what the dumbies at Napa recommended. And he added about 3 qts... And was asking me why it didnt read, i told him, somewhat calmly... it said add +1qt only and i only use 10W-60. Will the car blow up ? Did he ruin my m3? I cant even drain the oil out because my car is on coils and is to low, i am taking it in tomorrow. But all suggestions and pointers would be appreciative.

I'm WAY more concerned with the potential overfill situation over the type of oil he used.

I'd be thinking that's too much excess oil to have in the engine to drive it.
I would either do an oil change at home or more likely have it trailered to a dealer to have an oil change. |

The 5w40 will be fine. The overfilling will not be.
I suggest you siphon it out of the oil filter housing repeatedly. Or if you drive the car up on some 2x4s, you should be able to get enough clearance to jack it up and drain the oil. If you loosen the drain bolt, it should come out slowly (that way you won't have to drain the whole sump).

I don't understand why you can't adjust the coilovers and then just drain a bit from the pan? Siphoning is going to take a long time.

As was mentioned you have three options.
1. If you know three quarts were put in, take out around two and drive it till you get a reading. 2. Do a full oil change and be done with it. 3. If you can't get under the car, flat bed to a service place. I would figure out a way to do either option one or two but that's your call.

If he is really 3 qt over-filled, he should not be driving it anywhere.

Yea my service dealer is about maybe 5 miles away, but i dont want to ruin an engine.. Flatbed seems like a pain but if it saves my m3 i have to do it.

If you can reach the front sump then you could cycle this once or twice, idling the engine in between to get the front sump filled again. Oil overfill is most dangerous with high revs and hot oil, so this procedure should be ok. Good luck! |

Just change the oil and you'll be ok.

It's common to overfill certain engines that are tracked hard to try an reduce oil starvation. 1-2L is usually common. The s65 doesn't need it, but mechanically it won't do anything other than not run optimally. An engine doesn't magically just blow up. 3Qts also won't case it to reach the pistons or flood the cylinders, but even if it does, that just means the car won't run, it won't 'Blow up'. If that happened, draining the oil to the proper level will allow the engine to run once the oil burns out. I've personally drained an M62 V8, where the customer put 15L in it because some idiot told him too, the car ran but smoke poured out the tail pipe. Everything was fine after an oil change. To be safe, yes he shouldn't drive it. But since he already did and the engine runs and doesn't smoke like hell, that likely means a few miles won't kill it, it's upto him if he wants to take that risk....

It do not know the clearances in the BMW engines. The issue with overfilling is two-fold: If it is excessive, there may not be any room for the crank to rotate properly - fluids do not compress!; and second, if it is higher than it is supposed to be, but not enough to restrict the motion of the crank, the crank can still hit it - this causes the oil to froth up...excess air in the oil is harder to pump, and it can mess with the bearings.
The first is not likely since the motor ran. The second is more likely, but unless driven under stress or for a longer distance, probably didn't hurt anything. The oil does maintain a film, at least for awhile, and there would be at least some oil being pumped around, even with the air in it; just not at the volume or pressure it should have. |

Is the car so low that you can't drive it onto blocks of wood to gain enough clearance to put a jack under?

It's not worth the risk. Flat bed it to the bmw dealership and have peace of mind. If you are in Philly and the car is in LA, I wouldn't trust your father (who already screwed up once getting recommendations from morons at NAPA and failing to add oil properly) to fix the problem for you adequately.
