Which one has more chance to become a collector's item: the base 911 or the 911 Turbo?

I think you're right; they are just far too common.

Once they put the Infiniti on the list I knew this list was a joke.

The 1950 Ford Mustang was certainly not common and if you can find one it would be worth a small fortune (First year of the Mustang was 1964).

Alghough any old Mustang is somwhat collectible there is a huge difference in value betwwen a 6 Cylinder Automatic "Secretary's Special" and the high performance models like the Boss 302.

Other that the 507 there are no post war BMWs that have much of a presence in the collectible car market. Mustangs from the 60s and 70s, which were much common are much more in demand.

Of the top 1,000 collector cars sales (by price) in 2008-2009 there was one BMW (a 1958 507 Sll Convertible that went for $935,000 - # 130 on the list) more than 2 dozen Mustangs that went for over $200,000 and about 20 Shelby Muatangs that went for over $200,000.

The top 10 included 6 Ferraris including a 1957 Testa Rosa ($12,402,500 - #1) a 1937 Bugatti ($7,920,000) a 1960 Jaguar XKE Prototype Sports Racer ($4,957,000) and a 1965 Shelby Datona Coupe ($7,685,000).

Whether this is any indication of what will be collectible in 30 years remains to be seen. The sky high prices of 1960s American muscle cars was a big surprise to everyone.

This list only reflects cars sold at auction and does not reflect private sales. The most expensive car sold was a Bugatti Type 57 Atlantic Coupe (one of three in existance). The price was not disclosed but it is generally believed to be between $30,000.000 and $40,000,000.

Some very nice BMW models, notably the 2800CS and 3.0CS can be obtained at very reasonable prices and IMO the value of those models will soon start climbing.

What about the Z8, M Coupe, e46 CSL. All rarities that excite collectors. Please note that you listed the upper echelon of collectors. Car collectors represent a much broader sector.

they are all collectible to someone down the road. watch top gear for the reliant robin followers. A round-taillight 2002 tii I would consider a collectible but you can get them in the $15K range or less in fairly decent shape. as far as value on any modern car, its going to go down. there is always the next better thing. the boxster spyder isn't limited. Porsche will sell as many as possible and they will have a new faster better lighter boxster spyder down the road. Same goes for pretty much everything even high end cars like for instance Audi R8 with the V8, then the Audi R8 with the V10, now the Audi R8 GT. just buy your toy for you and enjoy it. don't save it for the next person and don't worry about it becoming collectible or appreciating. it probably won't and certainly not if you use the car for what its meant for. drive it! enjoy your bimmers. they are great cars.

None of those cars are worth as much today as they were when they were new. IMO Z8s (they are currently selling for $80-$100K) are very good buys at that price point and will probably appreciate rapidly.

Keep in mind that in 1969 a Mustang Boss 302, a Camaro Z28 and a BMW 2002 were priced similarly. Today the Mustangs and Camaros are worth 5 to 10 times what a 2002 is worth.

The collector car market can be very unpredictable but for the last few years it has been driven by baby boomers who are buying the cars they lusted after when they were young. It remains to be seen whether the same cars that are selling for huge prices today will be in as much demand in 30 years.

IMO the 335is is nowhere near as iconic a car today as the zZ8 Camaro, the Boss 302 Mustang and the Corvette Sting Ray were 40 years ago but I would never have thought that a 427 Corvette would be worth more than a Ferrai Daytona so who knows, a 335is may sell for millions at the 2050 Barrett Jackson auction.
