I'm going to try some GP Thunder 7500k bulbs and see how they look...

Ok so from a technical standpoint, why would someone buy an AiB kit instead of simple GP Thunders?

I am thinking of picking up the bulbs @ this pt...so cheap!

because GP's look like shit once you turn the headlights on. They look great when lights are off, but the higher temperature bulbs give off even less light than OEM and once they dim (when headlights go on) they are a very faint yellow color. I had both GP Thunder 7,500k and 8,500k (the second was kinda blue).

I had both GP 7500k and 8500k in my 135i. The 8500k's are too blue and not very bright. I may have to break and get an LED solution for the M3.

Thanks, good to know.

I had MTec's on my 2007 E92 335i and after about 1 year they started giving some intermittent errors (bulb out type of warning). Of course, it could have been something else (contact, wire etc.), but I think it shook my confidence a bit...

What about PIAA? They cost a pretty penny (like 65-70$) but are supposedly a cut above the rest.

Are these subject to the same issues as the GP Thunders?

Here is my summary to date: I just got Alpine HID in and installed them and they look stunning, no codes, no flickering, no bleeding like pictures would suggest. They have to be seen in person. I couldn't be happier. Some people say they are too bright...they are probably the same people that baby their car and worry about every little detail. I say fuck that and I could even use them a little brighter. It took a while for them to come in but I'm in Germany.

I had LUX at one point but never installed them since i got a 2010, one thing i know is I got the pimpest angels around here.

End of MY summary

Pics?? Is this a replacement of the bulbs and bulb systems or the rings? Sounds like a good option for those that want really bright. Price?

AFAIK GP Thunders are not subject to any "issues" I have replaced one of my two bulbs in three years. Other than than not a single issue. It is just a bulb...

You replace stock bulbs with hid ones, of course that requires a power source ballast and resistors. It's fairly easy to install if you know anything about electricity or how stuff works...if not there is a step by step video in M3 pics/videos forum in a thread titled "I'm Blinded"...and this video shows work done on M3 and not other BMW. I'll should have pics tomorrow.

Bear in mind that the same uneveness of the rings is still present using HIDs as with your OEM incandescent bulbs.

The only change is that light output at the rings is at a higher intensity than stock, with the cost being a much higher temperature (referring to heat, not color) within the headlamp housing.

No sorry I meant the issues of dimming when xenons are on. After reading a little more, I believe this is an issue with all bulbs, but I hear PIAAs are just better than the rest.

As for the LED solutions, they don't dim? How is that possible?

Here is a ginormous thread talking about bulbs...basically starting from when people discovered they can swap-'em out:

I emailed the guy with the thunders last night, hopefully I can get mine tomorrow. I think I am going to get both the 7500k and 8500k to test which looks better. The 8500 seems like the better color choice but the 7500k are supposedly brighter...

For the LED angel eyes systems not dimming, it takes a pretty extensive understanding of how the BMW system run's their angel eyes. From there you need to devise a system to adapt to the BMW electrical system and make sure there is no dimming in the LED's.

Understanding the BMW angel eye's electrical system is they key however

I'm with you, some people demand same intensity in all four halos but that pretty much impossible using plug and play kits.

As for heat...I live in Germany, problem solved.
