M135i vs M3

Ok, I know this was immature, but it was the early hours of the morning and the roads were empty.

I caught up with a M135i and was curious to see what would be the outcome of a traffic light race. Unfortunately, the M135 driver didn't share my moment of immaturity.

Now I can't help but wonder whether my m3 would have stood a chance, or whether he would have embarrassed my beast

stock vs stock, 135 would keep up with M3 in a 1/4mile. Dead even.

The 1M, M135i and M3, driven by the same driver with a decent ability and a good understanding of how each makes power, will be pretty much the same up to around 80-100 mph, the M3 might be a couple of car lengths ahead. What will be different is when you go on a track with high speed corners and chicanes, this is where the M3 will really shine.

lol at all these ///M variations being put out.

Any of these M sport cars shouldnt be able to compete with a real M car in anything.

from a stop - it feels as though my former 6MT '11 335i w/ PPK would pull on my 6MT M3. IMHO, same tune in a slightly lighter car would easily pull on an M3. Not sure how the DCT v. ZF8 variable would impact.

Certainly contextualizes the next M3.

That's not true at all if the drivers are equal

The 135 is bloody quick, and the m3 (at least mine) will be neck and neck with it for most reasonable hwy speeds. Couldn't tell u what would happen in higher triple digits, but I've been very impressed with the 135. The m3 is quite smooth in power delivery, and the 135 feels much more "punchy" at slower speeds.

I have both cars. 135i may be fast from a start but stands no chance at high speed and will lose breathe while the m3 will keep going to 8000+ rpms in third, fourth, etc. If the above were true the 1m coupe must be faster than an m6.

E90 m3 weight 3,7xx lbs
E82 135i weight 3,4xx lbs. 3400+ pounds in that small car!!!!

Sure its lighter than m3 but the 135i is not light at all. Ive seen a lot of posts here saying the 1er is so light. On the 1addicts site ppl complain about how heavy it is. It is much less track ready than the m cars as well.

But still a damn fun car!!

M3 is much faster than M135i. Almost 5 seconds up to 124mph, M135i would not be visible in the rear view mirror by that speed.

I had the 135 dct convertible and I doubt that my m3 mt would be able to keep up. That transmission is brilliant.

Yeah I have seen that, it is impressive, but my comment relates to the 1 series hatch. I hear that the hatch is faster than the 1 series coupe

Absolutly true!

I have a budy who owns a stock 1M and last year on our way back from a track event at Calabogie we decided to see how our car would compete on the highway, at that time my M3 was stock and it is manual. So we did a couple of runs from 30mph to +130mph, with always the same result; equal in second gear, as soon as I hit 3rd I pull easily, by the time I hit 4th I'm already 4-5 cars ahead, after that it's like he was stopped, at least 10-12 car lenghts more to end of 4th gear!

My car was so much faster then his from 3rd gear that I had to make sure with him that he did'nt let go the throttle, but he assured me he did'nt! And in fact I tryed an other 1M on the highway a couple weeks later and same story!

Just my two cents, I originally started looking at a M135i before I placed the order on my M3.

I drove the M135i a number of times, I really liked it. They certainly are very quick. There is basically no turbo lag (I have a 2008 Suabru STi, which has alot of lag)

I think upto 100 Km/hr there wouldnt be much in it. I did find traction an issue in the M135i, as it doesnt have a LSD and can only apply brake pressure to the spinning wheel. Which is a pretty strange feeling. However above around 100 Km/hr the M3 would smash it. The way that the M3 pulls at high speed is amazing.

And straight line speed is only one aspect of a car. You can tell that the M3 is a special car, it sound so much better and looks alot more expensive (mainly cause it is ). Looking at the M135i, it just looks like a 116i with fancy alloys (and they look pretty crap anyway)

Even thou I dropped basically twice the cash on the M3, its so worth it. The M135i is nice, but you can easily telling that is based on a small econobox, all be it a good small econobox. You can tell the that M3 is built for a purpose and really is something special, they dont make a bespoke engine for no reason.

If you where having a beer at the pub and some asked what you drove, which would you rather say?

Not sure what's up with that drag race. Regardless of weight, the 135 would only be even at the 1/4 mile if it had a tune. Stock for stock, big difference in trap speeds between the two.

A base 128i is 230 lbs lighter than a base 135i.

Headers/disa manifold/disa enabling tune (less than the price difference between the 128i and 135i) gets you to ~290 hp NA.

The 128i is the last non M car BMW makes than I would like to own. When it goes out of production, BMW will no longer make even a single car I'd consider buying .

Weight and hp

Well, I don't get it. Even in a short drag race, if a car is some 10% heavier but has some 30% more power, shouldn't it win over any distance that allows accessing the power, which means revving higher than 6000 in this case?

Confused, or maybe I need to revise my basic physics...

Check this out:

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...n/viewall.html

When new the M3 was far more expensive, but today, the 1M is so rare it is worth more (at least offered for more).

Completely agree. N52 is a far better engine for a long term owner as well.
