Emissions control pump?

My secondary air pump (emissions control pump) stopped working. I've seen many people modifying the computer not for this process to work.

What are a possible long term effects on the engine of not replacing the pump with a new one?

Is it the same to leave a emissions pump malfunctioning on the car than to have it there disabled?

Pretty much.. when the car detects a secondary air pump error, it ends the routine - so it's the same as being disabled in the first place.
