OP: At the end of the day, buying extended warranty is a calculated risk. Most repairs we're aware of costs in the range of $700 - $2500 per repair. You're rolling the die on how many of these come up within 5 years, 100k... I'm rolling my die and think at worst I'll have idle air control valve issue and maybe valve stem issue. Even if both comes up, they will cost less than $5000 total, which is the neighborhood of these extended warranties. So buy a 09 first, then you'll have about 6-9 months to decided on buying extended. Or you may be able to find a CPO which provides the extended coverage. But those cars will be more expensive as the extended warranties are already calculated into the price and are generally not discounted (if recently CPO'd) |

You want a warranty of this car. plan for a failure and hope for nothing to go wrong. Thats the way you gotta be in life.
Honestly though not every ones financially the same. Personally i can afford to have this car new and with a warrnety for many years. If i could not afford it this way, i would most likely buy a C6 corvette with a much cheaper repairs bills if you cannot fix it your self. The transmission (DCT) and engine are to much money to fix without a warrnety IMO. Its not that i cannot afford it, its the principle. So with that said, i would plan what ever is the best case for a warranty and what is going to cost you less money down the road plus stress. |

If I get a 2009 with only a few months, what type of warranty and maintenance coverage can I expect to tack onto it if the factory warranty is about to expire? I'd prefer to have coverage for at least the majority of the time I'm paying for it (60 months)

I had an aftermarket warranty on the 335i and by the time I sold the car it came to me I didnt even really need it, then I asked and they refunded the prorate to me, which came to be quite a large chunk of the initial money. I would say an extended warranty on the M3 would be a good idea but not really an essential thing, to me at least. Most aftermarket warranties are 3-4 years I beleive and have lets say 36-50k miles, so if you buy one with 34k and the warranty is 50K you would be covered to 84K or untill the time time ran out, whichever came first, also you can get some warranties with no co-pay, which is handy hope it helps in your decision (edit: the one i had was a bumper to bumper all inclusive and it was about 4k)

If you are contemplating going without an extended warranty, you might try visiting a local Indy repair shop (bimrs.org) to get a feel for what they charge for maintenance and maybe even see if they done much work on the e9x m3's to see if there are problem patterns they have seen. Afaik, there have been no patterns of failure on 2009+ street cars beyond normal wear and tear. Hath |

Keep in mind the limited range of the M3 compared to the 335is. Mediocre (that's being generous) gas mileage with small tank=frequent fill ups.

Quick update - I ended up keeping the 335is out of warranty. I'm at 123k miles now, and the options have really opened up. Trying to figure out what I want to do now...
1- Lightly used 2015+ F80/F82 M3/4 for $55k-60k - are these M's as bulletproof as the e92 ones? any issues like the HPFP on the n54? 2- e92 M3 2012-2013 - used for $35-40k and buy an extended warranty through Easycare/Paragon 3- Keep the 335is and buy a Route 66 extended Main Street warranty to cover for another 3 years and wait a bit longer for the M4/3 to come down in price

I had a 335is and moved on to E90 M3. Personally, if I had more funds I would buy the e9x M3 and kept the 335is as the DD and warrantied it through Route 66. If you are really looking to move on why deny yourself? Last edited by ganz; 01-08-2017 at 11:27 AM.. Reason: because my grammar is teh suck |

I went from 335is to E92 because I preferred E92 to F80. I think some will prefer F80 and some will prefer E92 because they are very different cars. |

Why would someone buy an M3 then complain about gas mileage. It's not some hidden fact. It's more a problem of some people buying a car over what they can comfortably afford to use and maintain it.

I think it's not that he didn't know or couldn't afford it necessarily, but he's just complaining about one of the car's "negatives".

Gas mileage isn't a huge concern for me anymore because I no longer have a long commute. If it was though, I'd probably just get the 440i/440i Gran Coupe, throw in MPPSK and call it a day.

Exactly. I was told by the previous owner that he was getting 18 mpg. I'm getting 11.5 mpg lol. I'm just trying to guide someone who is considering this car.

I actually haven't tried the F80/82 yet. Is the power delivery and low RPM torque similar to the n54?

I had this 335is between M3s.
Even with me lead-footing it, I got this kind of mileage. In this M3... I average this. Besides mileage, something else to consider is how much you will actually use the car. I had the 335is for just over a year and traded it in on my current M3 with just under 11,400 miles on the odometer. Four years later, I just rolled past 11,400 miles on my M3. LOL yeah but I picked up an F10 550i to spread the miles out.. I'm leaning towards just keeping it for another 3 years using the Route 66 warranty and then replacing it with an M4. Gas mileage isn't a huge concern but 12mpg is just silly...
