vs. Prius

I know this has been posted before but I just watched it again for the first time in 2 years and it made me LOL

17.2 mpg = Prius
19.4 mpg = M3

That is a great piece, and quintessential Top Gear stuff - both entertaining and educational.

First time I encountered anything like this was a piece in "Car Life" magazine way back in '71, comparing everyday Buick Skylark 350s, one a high-compression 1970 model, and the other a '71, set up to run on the then-new (and mandated) no-lead regular fuel.

Result: Just what you might expect, given the Top Gear piece. The 1970 car was of course quite a bit quicker than the '71, but it also got definitively better mileage throughout the side-by-side test - enough to more than offset the price-per-gallon difference between the fuels.

Primary difference: The '71 had to gas it harder to stay with the loafing 1970 car, pretty much like the M3-Prius story.

Well said, Bruce. I think driving style plays more of a role in MPG than the engine does.

Hahah yep. It is great to have this video when treehuggers come complaining. Granted emissions may be different, and I do care about the environment as well, but life has it's pleasures, and this is one of those legal pleasures that I would kill to experience everyday. One time a lady heard my Civic Si pull up at Trader Joe's and she proceeded to ask me a very stupid question and followed with a statement that pissed me off (mind you this is looking at my CIVIC!): Do you care about the environment? It doesn't look like it. I kindly smiled and said to her, when I keep my foot down, my car gets 14mpg. . She shut up, and I got some delicious TJ's Macaroni and Cheese

Own both

I have a plug in prius as my DD and a e93 M3.

Prius gets 105 MPG, M3 gets about 16.

What's your commute like?

I daily my M3, but I don't have to deal with much traffic.

I got a Prius too. Don't knock it. It's great on gas. We take it when we need a beater or when the weather sucks. It really does get 50 mpg. There is something about driving around in a hybrid that makes you want to drive even slower and smoother.

I got 21mpg in my Prius on Infineon Raceway, turning 2:22's using regenerative braking. I'm sure mileage would be worse using friction braking but laptimes would come down a bit.

Driving a prius is like riding on a train. I personally couldn't stand a silent car, I'd probably fall asleep after a long week with little sleep.

I love top gear UK, too bad the American version didn't follow closely enough.

As a counter point, I really like my '05 Prius. I have 135K miles on it and it's been on Infineon Raceway, Thunderhill Raceway Park, and Reno-Fernley Raceway. It's an awesome DD for crappy roads and heavy traffic in the SF Bay Area. I take it places where I wouldn't feel comfortable driving my sporty cars (i.e. bad roads or the city).

It does consume a couple quarts between canges now though, which is surprising for a Toyota but may be expected given that it's been tracked during some instructor days and generally driven pretty hard.

My dad got a 2012 Prius Plug-In to use the HOV lanes (stickers valid to 2015) about 7 months ago. The additional 90 lbs. weight gain from the extra batteries and softer suspension have dulled the car down. I wouldn't think of tracking that car but it is convenient to carpool solo.

i think you are one of the rare few that would ever think of tracking any prius.

Probably. Handles better than I thought it would since the batteries are down low. Great lead-follow tool.
