Saw this over on jalopnik the other day. Devastating. Speculation is that the checkered had been thrown and the field backed off, but that particular Ferrari didn't see the checkered and kept the hammer down, then had an "oh shit" moment when he came up on traffic so quickly on the straight.

i also could not understand why everybody else appeared to be on a parade lap and he was going 200mph.

Ah, that makes more sense...as stated above, big difference in speeds had me confused.

Didn't his pit crew radio him to tell him the race is over?

Reason # 12 why you never look away from a hot track if you are at a wall.

A buddy works the Montreal Grand Prix as a marshal and all the "bad" stories from that weekend involve f-ups by "gentleman" racers in the Ferrari race!

It is a smart way for Ferrari to generate a regular income stream! I wonder how much Ferrari duct tape costs???

Wow - very lucky that both of them survived (especially the marshall who obviously was not protected by any safety equipment - other than the wall)

Wow. Its unbelivable that anyone can survive after hitting that wall at almost 200 mph.

Guess: Likely an equipment failure. Despite the checkered flag - that car was going waaaaaay too fast to have any hope of negotiating the next turn.

I'd say the equipment that likely failed was the driver's brain.

Clearly that was a checkered flag parade lap but the driver kept the hammer down. There was no way he could negotiate that corner even if he was going straight line and not out of control. I don't get how the guy at the wall didn't see it coming. Makes me think the loss of control happened very near the impact which makes no sense with that turn ahead.

I agree that something went wrong with the driver or the car. I think it was the car. The driver had a choice - he chose to hit the wall along the pit exit with a glancing blow rather than hit the wall facing the upcoming corner head-on. He probably saved his life with that choice.

amazing all survived, wow. very weird the driver wouldn't have noticed everyone slowing. it looks like though instead of going straight and hitting that run-off coming off the straight, he might have wanted to cut the corner into the grass to shoot past the cars and out of the way, but the tip of barrier came up instead and clipped him. OR major driver / car error. looking it multiple times, it's hard to tell.
