Skyline Run WV - Poll

This will be the last Skyline Run of the year so I decided to make it a little special. The best roads within driving distance for our area are in West Virgina. They're gorgeous, empty, and the speed limit is either 55 or not posted on almost every mountain road. I think this is the closest you can get in the US to the experience of driving Bavaria. In order to reach these amazing roads we will have to make this a two day trip. Saturday will include the bulk of the driving, staying at a nice hotel in the heart of West Virgina. Sunday morning will include about 2 hours of driving on the best road in the state (save the best for last) headed to I81. Once on I81, the Run is over and everyone should have plenty of time left to enjoy their Sunday at home.

So the question is, which weekend works best for everyone? If more than one weekend works for you, please vote for each. Please also contact everyone you know that has been wanting to do a Skyline Run to let them know its back for the best Run yet!

Below are some pictures and video taken while testing the roads last November. [I'm not the one driving in these videos ]

Looking forward to this all year.

I'd hate to be in the back ; I know that your pretty familiar with the route and go pretty fast through the corners.
Darkstar, do you mind if I trail right behind you during this run?

Thats correct! I did 8 laps. But that's a story for another thread. I need to find the time to edit all my video footage into one vid for a proper ED thread.

I don't mind at all. It would actually be nice if I had someone to help plan this. There's a lot of responsibility and work that goes into planning the whole thing, keeping everyone together and on track. Sometimes I do a better job than others but at some point I'd like to just sit in the middle of the group and enjoy it. Any volunteers?

I would love to do this w/ my e36. Spent a weekend w the girlfriend last May in the Canaan/Elkins/Blackwater area. The roads were amazing. Smooth as glass, great sweepers and switchbacks w big elevation changes, no cops, no traffic. What more do you want??

I find this area to be MUCH better that Skyline.

I'll try and make this work for me, any idea when to expect a decision on the date?

From last year:

If I get familiar with the route; I can lead the group.
I think I would need a passenger to help me navigate if I am leading.

Either way, please let me know if I can contribute towards planning the whole thing!

Do you have the route you took? I don't have mine finalized yet so if you could send me what you think were the best roads that you went on, that would be helpful.

Absolutely! I tested the roads last year but don't have a full route plan finalized yet. Once I do I can send it over to you and you can use Google map's street view to get familiar with roads and turning points or drive it yourself. Right now I'm struggling to figure out a place to stop for lunch that can accommodate everyone. I'm also trying to get a good option for the Hotel. I doubt people would want to drop more than $150 for a room but don't want to stay at Motel 8 either. There are some excellent resorts in the area but getting them to a decent price might be hard. If you have any ideas, send them on over!

Here is the route I took once in Harpers Ferry, WV.

Start out going WEST on WASHINGTON ST/US-340 ALT toward MCDOWELL ST. 0.3 mi Map

4. Merge onto US-340 S toward BERRYVILLE/LEESBURG (Crossing into VIRGINIA). 13.4 mi Map | Avoid
5. Merge onto VA-7 W/BERRYVILLE PIKE toward WINCHESTER. 8.8 mi Map | Avoid
6. Merge onto I-81 N toward MARTINSBURG. 2.1 mi Map | Avoid
7. Take the US-11/VA-37 exit, EXIT 317, toward US-522 N/WINCHESTER/US-50 W/STEPHENSON. 0.2 mi Map | Avoid
8. Turn LEFT onto US-11 S/MARTINSBURG PIKE/VA-37 S. 0.5 mi Map | Avoid
9. US-11 S/MARTINSBURG PIKE/VA-37 S becomes VA-37 S. 3.4 mi Map | Avoid
10. Take the US-50 exit toward WINCHESTER/ROMNEY. 0.3 mi Map | Avoid
11. Turn RIGHT onto NORTHWESTERN PIKE/US-50 W. Continue to follow US-50 W (Crossing into WEST VIRGINIA). 73.6 mi Map | Avoid
12. Turn LEFT onto WV-42. 4.4 mi Map | Avoid
13. Turn RIGHT onto WV-93. 17.0 mi Map | Avoid
14. Turn LEFT onto WV-32/ALLEGHENY TRL. Continue to follow WV-32. 0.9 mi Map | Avoid
15. Welcome to DAVIS, WV.

a lot of the other good roads were in the Canaan/Elkins area. Not sure what they were but it was a fantastic area.

I'd be fine with $150 or a little more if need-be. If we have a group maybe we can get a decent group rate?

That would be great. I can certainly go out there and drive the route first hand. Last month, BMWCCA had a Pie Run and we encountered road closures. I think driving the route important so that we can identify any hazards or closures before the event.

mdyaman if I can keep up in a bullrun with my 330xi, you can keep up with this in your M5. Though I'll probably be bringing my porsche. Get some new tires and let's roll!!
Oct 15-16.

Sniz, great shots!

Can't wait for this one. I'm game for October 8-9. I like the idea of staying overnight and then heading back Sunday.

Since I've never made a Skyline yet, I'd like to join up. I have complete confidence in whatever's chosen and would just like to enjoy the ride, no drama or b****ing.

I was actually considering a weekend in WV and this would be the perfect opportunity! Good choice, can't wait to see how it comes together. For the hotel, I'm willing to splurge, but would still hang with everyone wherever the decision's made.

Hope to see everyone next month! Voted Oct 15-16.
