I want to learn how to drift

How do you drift in a 135i, i don't know how to even drift a car, so can you guys give me tips or even give me step by step or w/e, so i can be drifting soon. :biggrin:

Do a search in youtube.com? If you want to be a skilled driver you might want to get some training. I plan to start this spring by BMW in their cars with trainers. There might be cheaper ways, but I do suggest talking to people who can "steer" you in the correct direction, so you do not hurt yourself, your car, or others... As much as people here do know but something like this, you really have no way of verifying that those DIY are proper. That's my take.

I've been searching youtube all day, found a lot of helpful tips, but the best method i see right now is going to a training program or school for it.

I would suggest picking up a cheap 240sx to practice with before trying it in your 135...

Don't forget to turn off DSC/DTC. You will need to be in TIM YOYO mode.

That is a great shot, and describes in a 'picture worth a thousand words' what drifting is like. Notice how the front wheels are still in the direction of the turn - Perfect technique!

However, it is not possible to describe drifting to someone, or give them a step by step instructions. It comes with experience. It comes with knowing your car. It comes by feel, after you have driven your car around 100 corners, and you know exactly when the car's rear end starts to slide, and precisely what gear and rpm to be at and exactly how much throttle and over steering is appropriate. It is you and the car as one.

A touch of the brakes, or a nervous twitch of the steering wheel can lead to disaster, so you have to pick your situations carefully.

you really need to get a cheap beater to practice

I learned on gravel roads growing up, and on snow, where drifting is the norm and you quickly learn what the limits feel like

Nonsense, I've taught several people how to drift. Getting input & coaching from someone who knows what they're doing is key to gaining a full understanding of vehicle dynamics, driver input, and the relationship between those two. You can practice by yourself all day long, but you'll still miss important things that an experienced person will notice and point out to you.

I never would have made it to the level I am at right now without the help & input from people who were smarter/faster/better than me.

OP - don't be stupid and risk your car or life on the street; take it to the track! There are organizations that put on dedicated "Drift Days" at Willow Springs, about 1.5 hours' drive from LA. They are cheap, you will have a blast, and your car will not end up wrapped around a light pole.

- There's a video of our car at California Speedway, doing a little drifting.

- At the end of that video there's a good slide too.

I should have been clearer - I meant remotely over the internet. Of course, hands on coaching is great. It would be like learning to ride a bike with a text message from a friend. (That is what training wheels are for.)

the best way to learn car control is to do Autocrossing. and you can start with BMWCCA car control clinic.

If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape. Driving e82, e72, e85, R53 Gone but not forgotten.. 1974 2002, many various 3s.
