its not 'might' .... it almost certainly will!! everyone's downsizing their engines and making them turbo or super charged.

You know this is a repeat of the early '70s, right? Muscle cars from the '60s had gobs of power and sucked the gas. When the gas crisis hit in the '70s, people thought high-performance cars were a thing of the past. Flash forward to the '90s and look at the cars now...producing as much power or more as those from 30 years ago and getting 2-3 times better gas mileage. I am kind of thankful for some of these standards as it forces the companies to improve efficiency. I just wish my M got 30mpg on the highway like my '07 vette did!!

I have to agree with you and yes it is a push from the past. Improvements in the automotive field have been sort of fabulous over the years.

As Albert Einstein once said "In The Middle Of Difficulties Lies Opportunity" I do believe in this and let us hope that automotive engineering will do one better and get us that + 30 mpg in the type of cars we like to drive.

it's about producing better fuel economy, government control, and making those middle eastern countries less fat with money-they need a diet anyway.

Many of you don't get it. They want you out of your car.

They wanted people to stop smoking. So they taxed them out of smoking.

Same thing with cars. This has nothing to do with efficiency to them. It has to do with fairness. It's unfair that you should be able to drive such an ostentatious car while others don't have food, don't have a house, don't have a mother, whatever. These people have to ride a bus. Have you no guilt! You need to be punished for your lavish choices and so you will be taxed into a bus.

Go ahead and try being more efficient. They are relentless and will simply up the requirements and/or the tax.

I'm lucky enough to afford an M3 and the gas, too. I love it not only for it's performance but for the statement it makes. My license plate frame might soon say "Gas Guzzling Hotrod."

Yep. The government thinks people will become depressed when they see a new BMW or other sports car when they're unemployed or something. Also, they want to eliminate fuel inefficient cars all together and make us use electrics and hybrids.

By the time I even have enough money to consider getting an M3, the new one will be out.. so I can't wait to see/feel the difference between the two!

Never underestimate the power of lobbing in our political system. Very few things in Washington are lobbied for, at a level that controls policy, that doesn’t make money. There is money in “green”, but there is also allot of money in auto manufacturing. Don’t expect any policy change that affects automakers too negatively in an extreme way. Money is being spent as well, to support the auto industries interests. We are a high volume market, and just like gas, our car pricing relative to the rest of the world should remain consistent. At least until we no longer command the buying leverage.

Also I read an interesting article on mbforum about a far more advanced version of cylinder cut off in one of their new amg models. That is most certainly an alternative to forced induction that can and will be further explored and advanced as restrictions increase to some extent.

Do you guys wear your tin-foil hats when you drive, or does the CF roof keep the black helicopters from recording your thoughts?

I thought this was a CAR forum.....
