AHHHHH...welcome to my world...since I got my M in April, it's been in the shop 4 times now, around a month and a half accumulated service, my diff keeps backing out the bolts holding it up, and rubbing (as you stated) and clicking/clunking/thumping and eventually breaking off the head of the bolt...good luck, hope you don't have the same problem that I do...have your bimmer shop re-torque your diff bolts and see if they are loose at all...good luck

I have had the same issue. The service they performed that was identical to GregW's service. However, my noice did not stop immediately. I am still noicticing a bit of noice when I turn sharply. I am going to monitor this for another 500 miles, and see if it stops.

I don't what are the options if it doesn't

The m5 I drove for the M school had the noise when making a sharp u-turn. Sounded like a fender rubbing.

All e46 M3's & e9x M3's have this noise, the additive is called FMBooster fixes the problem and is added when the diff oil is first serviced. Half smart dealers should know this!

Yup, u guys are right it is the rear diff, causing the noise. BMW NA also released service information bulletin for this problem. According to the bulletin the fluid should be changed with the FM booster, and driven until diff fluid reaches operating temp. Finally the tech "should" drive the vehicle in circles 20 times both ways; this allows appropiate break in of the diff. Bulletin states that grinding noise may still be present for about another 500-600miles.

Did ur dealers ask you to replicate this problem? I went to momentum BMW and they wouldnt change my diff oil until the noise is replicated. And for some reason the car is not doing it. I am utterly pissed!

I took my e92 in for an alignment and to address the intermittent diff noise and here's the response from BMW...(see attached)

Essentially, BMW says just live with it...

Just got the sound as well. How long does it take for them to change the fluid? I might leave it alone for a while but if theyre not to busy might just ask them to do it one of these days. Doesnt really bother me much tho, as long as I now know its nothing serious.

Does this noise sound like a cd sliding across metal? I recently noticed this noise when I come to a stop or speeding up. It doesnt always happen, but when it does it doesnt sound normal.
I'm really really annoyed and worried I broke something.

Not if it is from the front. It sounds like a rear wheel rubbing on the fender liner, to me. Roll down you window in a parking garage and listen closely when turning.
