You're right JCE. The options are important. I also ordered Space Gray knowing the Fire Orange was available. The reason I submitted the thread was the dealer is trying to sell me on the exclusivity of the color. Being that I have not seen this particular option on the BMWUSA website, I wanted to see if anyone saw the value in it. Judging by some of the response it appears that it is quite the contrary.

In any case, the responses listed have helped me realize my current purchase with Space Gray is the way to go.
Can you say who the dealer is?

The orange is stunning in person. Probably loud for a dd, but there will always be buyers for it. I've already had offers for my LSB.

+1 on the offers.

When I owned an '03 Phoenix Yellow M3 with Imola Red leather, I would receive offers periodically, and that car was largely regarded as the "Ronald McDonald" M3 on E46Fanatics.

I like the orange (and yellow for that matter) a lot. My first car was a 1973 VW Camper top Van orange ext/int. But would I order my M3 in that color? Hell no. I just wouldnt want to dd it. Too much attention from everyone to include law enforcement (just like red). It sure is a fun color to look at though...

FO would be great, especially if not using for a DD. I agree with aajami, you may find a smaller pool of buyers for resale but those will have strong feelings about orange. I've seen a few orange RS4s for sale and they don't last long.

PM me the name of the dealer if you don't wind up going with the Big O...

Here's the dilemma. The dealer offered me a 2011 E92 M3 in Fire Orange with ZCP (black wheels). The paint is a $5000 option. The car comes with DCT. No other options. Cloth seats, no packages, no nav etc. ... The car is also $2600 more than my order.
I am trying to make the numbers work out here. How does this Fire Orange car come out to be more than the one you ordered? I know it has a $5000 paint job, but you've got way more than that in options and packages. Did you not order DCT? If not, then it sounds to me like that is easily the biggest discrepancy between the two. If you have already decided on 6MT, you better go test drive a car with DCT before you even think of considering buying one. It is obviously going to change the entire driving experience.

Absolutely. In fact, if I were to get an M3 coupe today, it would be exactly this car. I'd probably have added Assist/Bluetooth too if I ordered it. Actually I'd probably wait for 2012 and add in ad-hoc comfort access also. But I would not let these little things stop me from getting this one instead if I could get it at no more than $1000 over invoice.

Urban legend...

...coming from one of So.Cal's finest. Car color is largely irrelevant as is make/model.

I think the color and the odd options would eventually be bothersome, not to mention the effect on resale.

Only if you plan to use the car as a track car only and plan to modify seats, dash, etc...

Options are a big deal, you can slap the 5k paint option on any other car...

Tell the dealer to hook the car up with some more options and you'll go from there...

absolutely not
unless if you can get it with leather and options orange will be bad idea
especially when the dealer is trying to sell this to you.Just because
the dealer said it makes me extra suspicious.
besides 5K for color paint is completely waste of money since
resale will not count on this --in contrast this color will drop the retail even more.
and you will get nauseous by the basic seats as well.

stick with your awesome space gray.

Cloth seats, no packages, no nav etc. I think its an attempt by the dealer to create a GTS. The car is also $2600 more than my order. Would anyone here consider this over the car I purchased? It's extremely basic and the cloth seats are not for me but the pictures of the car are fantastic. It looks like such a beast. I have 3 weeks to decide before the dealer takes delivery. Does anyone think the paint will help the car retain value longer. Or will the lack of options cancel that out?

Thanks for the help.

I bought my e92 in August and before that had a Grabber Orange Mustang GT. I will tell you from experience that if you are interested in resale than tread carefully. If you find someone that loves the colour you are set but otherwise it will hurt you.
Also, SG on FR looks great so either choice is going to be awesome.

For those that consider individual colors, resale value is largely irrelevant.

Fire Orange and similar colors are for those who like bright colors. If you like it, then that's your choice. I also contemplated a Fire Orange car but decided against it even before being told it was sold. Bottom line is that such a car will get a lot of attention, whether on the street or a parking lot. I personally would not want to deal with that kind of attention. Imagine parking it at a mall. Every M-fan or ill-doer is going to be checking out your car, standing around it, etc. I would not be surprised is some fool intentionally scratched your car while parked at a mall - just because it's an attention-getting M3.

I ordered my car as a manual. I've driven the manual and enjoy it. I've had a hard time finding a DCT to test drive. I know the DCT is quicker 0-60 and in the quarter but I'm concerned it may not be as fun. Have you driven one? Is it as enjoyable as the manual? I am looking to test drive a DCT. Dealer says I can change my mind within about 5-6 days and either add or remove any option.

Make up your mind fast. Your car can switch from 112 to 150 status at any time. No more changes once that happens.

I personally like the orange, but resale is a problem. let's say you will keep it for ever, you will regret not getting the options. I love my options. I have a fully loaded. I went last weekend and looked at a used 09 no options, and it sucked. I specially love the leather. cloth seats are not for me. good luck.
