I've heard about someone doing that here with great success.

He does but pretty sure he was referring the question of having any additional DCT cooling. He mod list was listed in this post:

Great job especially for that DA. A VT3 properly setup, at Atco, should go north of 140, hopefully one can eventually run out there.

91deg F....ice tank FTMFW. It created negative DA. Can't to that with an air to air system.

Does any vendor provide an ice tank that allows you to retain a usable trunk?

Unfortunately not, however vendor MRF Engineering and I have been talking about building a tank in place of the black plastic pieces under the trunk (where the tire inflation system resides) and making tank of the same shape there with cooling fins.

There's gotta be some kind of 1-2gal tank that would fit on top of where the amp or battery sits. For E93 owners it'd be a no go, but there's so much room in the E92 trunk.

To make it worthwhile from what I hear, the capacity really needs to be increased to something like 5 gallons. I thought about trying with a simple meth tank in that location but I'm afraid it just wouldn't be as beneficial. Obviously would be great if someone with an AWRON guage could log temps before an after something like this 'cause who knows maybe you are right. Just getting the water flow out of the engine bay has to be worth some heat reduction.

That and there being ice in it to cool the liquid quite a bit.

That's where it would be good to have more capacity. At EAS we hooked up a 20 gallon igloo to my intercooler and put a few gallons of water and a full bag of ice, started the dyno pull immediately after and watched the 35-40 degree water turn warm by the middle of the dyno pull. On the track you could possibly melt all your ice by the time you put it in the small 1-2 gallon tank, shut your trunk, seat-belt up, and get up to the staging line to race.

LOL yea for a pass or two and if you keep filling the tank back up. But yes, IMO it will give you better cooling for short bursts. As soon as you start moving and getting any kind of air flow... the air to air starts working and working well. When the air is hot/humid it really is a big difference in keeping IAT's in check compared to the air / liquid system. I know, i've had both systems

1 pass is all that counts

Regardless with OP's high capacity 5 gallon trunk-tank, the water stays much cooler particularly with freeway speed airflow through the heat exchanger. OP was able to pull on Porsche Carrera GT on the highway. My buddy did a 6.5 60-130 with his GT to show you that these would usually destroy a S/C M3 in that kind of environment.

Yea I saw that vid....I know the OP, he's in my neck of the woods

The ice tank kinda reminds me of a shot of nitrous though. Now that I run a ESS kit... I wish there was a more consistent solution for keeping temps in check.

I'm going to be working with ACM this spring/summer, to see if we can install some parts to help with cooling....we shall see

Cool keep us posted. I just ordered this: http://killerchiller.com/t/mercedes

OP tried it and didn't like it but had issues with air in the AC lines. I'm going to make sure this is not an issue. How does it work? Turn the AC on an in 5 minutes the water in the intercooler drops to 40deg F.

There is a diversion of the water in our intercooler to this killer chiller unit which is hooked in to the Freon from the AC. Turn on the AC and the Freon runs through this tank which significantly cools down the intercooler water to 35-40 degrees F in a couple minutes. You can touch your manifold and it will be ice cold. As you know, our cars run like raped apes with ice cold intake temps.

I'll be running that mixed with distilled water one I get my new ESS rig.

I'm also going to take a serious look at the Killer Chiller. My car is a DD and I hear the KC system can make your AC not function very well when on. There's supposed to be some switch that disables the KC lines and routes around it for normal driving.

There's a few other cooling options I'm looking into as well. The wastegate mod supposedly decreases IATs as a side effect, but I'll find out eventually
