That's because it is an AUTOMATIC.........they all have a "Take off Hesitation"!
I test drove 33oi/525i & 530i all with an Automatic.......all had the hesitation!
When you jump to the V8 - 545i.....no hesitation because of the Power!
I purchased the 6 speed - 330i ... No Problem at Take off !!

On my 1st test drive, I noticed the hesistation starting from a red light too.

However, I didn't notice it as much on my 2nd test drive. Maybe I was going harder, since I was by myself and kind of more familiar with the car the 2nd time.

But it's not something that's going to kill the driving experience for me. It's an automatic, so to be expected.

Just my 2 pennies.

does the problem go away if you floor it a bit more?

it may just be the characteristic of that particular automatic tranny

are you used to driving manuals? compared to a manual I could see how it seems to not move for a second when you start pushing the pedal

Its really not a problem of lack of power. The problem is that the initial tip-in of the throttle pedal doesn't invoke the kind of power that you expect from the car. This is either a bug or designed this way on purpose, for many possible reasons (softer starts, softer starts during break-in only, soft setting to begin with then adapts to your driving style...).

Those of you who haven't driven the car, please do so.

I am experiencing the same hesitation on my new automatic 2006 330i. It is very disappointing especially since my 1999 automatic 323i has better initial acceleration than my e90. If you search the board there is another post with some possible reasons for the lag but no one is for sure. I hope it can be fixed with a software upgrade or eventually the car will adopt to my driving style after the break in period. So far I have 650 miles on the car and haven't noticed any improvements since driving it for two weeks.

I just found the link
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=398

Even though it mentions the 330i acceleration it still is relevant to the 325i

Try it with DSC turned off completely (but be careful!). You do this by pressing and holding the DSC button for 3 seconds (or more) until you see a warning triangle in the center desplay in the instrument panel. DSC modulates engine output to prevent skidding (including start off skidding).

WARNING: You should only drive with DSC off if you know what you're doing and know your car's limits!

Too bad you can't just open up the hood and tighten up the throttle cable. They might still have some bugs with the engine software...just like the Nav and I-Drive...and active steering.

RachelS...did you drive the E46 (or older versions) prior to your new E90? I was just curious if the hesitation seems different, or how different, from other BMW's. thanks!

BOY WAS I WRONG....GOING TO THE DEALERS FIRST THING...

It feels like my grandfathers old car with the trans slipping when you first take off.

Wow...nice to know someone hasn't fallen competely into the hype. A lot of people read the blushing reviews in the magazines and just automatically assume the 3-series is infallable.

Is it different from when you test-drove one?

My manual 330i has no such problem. Do you still feel "hesitation" if you put it in sport mode? A friend of mine tells me his Porsche Cayenne starts in second gear unless he puts it in sports mode. Maybe something like that is happenning here too.

i think it might just be that all auto's are like that. I drove my sisters slk 350 and there is also a hesitation. But then again it might be like silverado said because in the MB theres "comfort" and "sports" and comfort starts in second gear and sports starts in first. To me in sports mode it felt somewhat better but still a hesitation

I think the ride of your life can only be attained with a manual tranny. I don't understand why people bought the 3 automatic, if they didn't like the acceleration? Didn't you take it out on a lengthy test drive before you signed on the dotted line? You should have driven it back to back with an Infinity G35. It's motor has a bit more low end torque that a lot of AMERICANS like with their auto-trannies. Generally, automatics need a lot of engine torque for them to perform well. Higher torque is usually associated with larger displacement motors. This is why an Infinity G35 (3.5L motor) seems faster than a Bimmer (3.0L motor). I say 'seems' faster, because torque is just that initial spinning force you feel when you stomp on the pedal. After that, it is all horsepower. This is where the 330 motor excels. This is why the 330 is just as fast as a G35 (in acceleration tests), even though it doesn't feel that way in the seat of your pants.
