I don't think you get it. There is nothing to settle with regards to the notion that you can modify a less expensive car and beat a more expensive car in a drag race. Kids have been doing this with civics, and before that chargers and before that hot rods, etc... The trivial case would be a straight line but it's easily possible to do the same thing with a trackable car too. There are several tube frame kit cars that will creme most production cars in both straight line performance, braking and track performance for around $20K. Never mind the hundreds of hours of assembly time required. The real trick is to create a car with the same level of interior and exterior refinement, acceleration, braking and handling for the same or less money. That's where you get into subjective categories and comparisons and if you place any value on your time (as low as $10/hour) you'll spend way more on your "cheaper" car.
Build out the best 335i (or xi) you can and then hire an independent driver to run the car (and a stock M3) through it's paces (acceleration, braking, lap time) and then submit both cars to a car show (or whatever independent panel you can find) for review of the interior and exterior design and styling. If you do not put north of $70K into the 335i before it wins three out of the five categories (still only a marginally "better" car) then you have a viable business opportunity to build a "better" car. The more categories the more realistic the test and the more it will cost you to "win" with the 335. The real holy grail is to add reliability to the list of tests. If you want to "settle" something why don't you settle these tests and stop trying to beat the 1/4 mile acceleration dead horse? The majority of the posts on this thread are groaning about that repeat "issue" and not questioning if it's settled or not. You and the OP are just late to the party. |

This sure turned into a train wreck......
With that said....Once my M3 DCT is broken in I will "volunteer" my M3 for any challenge...BUT there must be two tests....one at the drag strip & another at the road course..... I figure I might loose the drag, but unless the 335 is heavily modded suspension wise, I will not loose the road course.... Having the testing in the summer at Thunderhill also will not help the 335 with its known cooling issues either

road course or 1/4 mile the M3 will stand up to the abuse much better than the modded 335, I'm sure after a couple of runs the 335 will start giving trouble or trigger a CEL

The 335 is a great car and it can be faster than an E9X M, in a straightline, when tuned...
Of course, like has been noted ad nauseum, reliability and warranty issues are major concerns and the 335 will not hold up to repeated track abuse similar to anything close to what the M can endure... The 135 is a much 'purer' car than the 335, and has much better driving characteristics...I can't wait for the day the 135 vs 335 threads start popping...for the 335 owners... All one has to do is drive the 335 and M back to back, and they will see that the 335 will never be a M... |

bmw f**kd up when they brought out the 335 and now theyre doing all this DME stuff to cut back on the tune cuz for under $1000 dollars 335 owners are owning M3 owners. i agree about the refinement and yada yada, but im prettyyyyy sure that its cuz its cutting into M3 Sales. Sorry TBone gonna have to disagree with you. Remember everything in this world is about money. Either the 335 will go away soon and its back to 325, 328, 330 or M3 will get another powerboost soon.

Wrong. BMW is messing with the DME workings to keep people from hurting the engine. If they could have reliably produced more hp in the 335, I'm sure they would have. They decided that the warranty was important and so set the boost at a reliable yet still sporty level.

lol this thread is never going to die. Honestly, for those that have never driven both cars, it's kind of a moot point. Both are amazing bimmers so why argue.

I think M3 is a Great car, but not the best car in that price range .The best sport car in that (70000k) price range right now is the Nissan GTR. (this car will beat any production car in the world today)
The reason we are having this discussion is because the 335i’s engine is one of the best turbo engine in the market today. It can be easy to turn to surpass the M3 V8 engine performace. But still the M3 vs 335i is more than just the engine……….. just my 2 cents Typev1020 |

I'm sorry, but even Dinan's own propaganda video shows that the stock M3 is still a hair faster in a straight line than the 335 with 15k in mods, and quite a bit faster on the track. And when you try to sell your car, you will get NONE of that 15k back. Oh, and it is still just a 335. Dear God people, 335s are nice, but not that nice. |

chipped 335 > GTR, but then by the same token (the bmw snob token) M3 > GTR so question is still unanswered
in any case let's admit bmw fucked up on one of the cars. either fucked up by putting a TT on 335 and made it fast, or TT on 335 is great but they fucked up on M3 and made it slow |

It won't end, because the 335i boys want their car to be like the M3. Good luck 335ers, you will never achieve the complete package.
