Impressions Part 2
There was a question about the 6 speed transmission in the new car. this is all we had to drive in Germany as the DCt was not available. I have always preferred the standard 6 speed because I am used to it and like to heel and toe. The pedals are perfect for me in this car as they were in really all the other BMW's I have had. I drove an SMG E46 on the track and this is really where it shines. It is way cool to just have to nail the brakes and downshift with F1 throttle blips. In the real world, however, I found the SMG to be somewhat clunky and I prefer to do the shifting myself. I would never need the "automatic" mode so that was not an issue. Recently drove a friends Aston Martin Vantage and while gorgeous, the shifting was awful!
I had no complaints about the new cars 6 speed. I am not sure what "rubbery" means but I found the transmission to be fine on the track. Shifts seemed to be shorter than the E46 and it was easy to drive smooth. The E46 was always a little jerky shifting from 1st to 2nd unless the revs were just right, I did not notice it in this car though I was almost always accelerating pretty hard! Botom line. This is purely personal preference.Sounds like the DCT will be much better than SMG. For those that want the auto option and a Nick Heidfeld experience do with DCT. For those old school guys the 6 speed is just fine. I hope to drive a DCT car if they get one at the performance center, and if I do I will give my thoughts. |

^^ happy to read your review on 6MT man. that 6MTGirl review made me feel like shit about the car, especially the clutch/tranny. oh man that review was so negative man. even if she has nothing against it, she'd say "it was nothing special"

Positive 6-speed review
Me, too, especially since my 6-speed is somewhere in the Atlantic. I missed the start of DCT availability, but not sure I would have chosen it anyway.

I have to place an order in the near future. I would never go for the DCT. Manual is the way to go. For this M3 atleast.

You will be happy with the 6 Speed, and you can put the $2700.00 savings (DCT cost ) toward something else!

Thanks
You are right that would be a solution. I love the e46 comp. pack, but reading some other possitive reviews made me gain some hope. I guess il just have to wait and drive it. The e92 m3 gtr though looks so stunning. so im guessing the e92 will just have to grow on me.

Guys and Gals, read my lips!
As I said, I have driven the E46 and the new car on the track and there IS no comparison. You would have to have the E46 CSL to come close to the new car. The competition pkg is nowhere near this good. Not sure who is selling this car as being soft? How many of you have driven the car and really wrung it out? I know the looks are subjective and some may very well like the old one better, but go drive one for yourself and don't rely on a few journalists that try to find any flaw they can. We were with the German guys that have hundreds of laps on the ring and all I can say is you should see the grin on their faces! My one lap with them at the wheel on the north loop was worth the trip over there by itself. Besides, in the real world you will drive this thing at about 1/10 of its capability.

Excellent Skierman 64!
You will be mighty happy at 7/10 in this car. The grip with the special Pilot Sports will have you hunting every on/off ramp you can find. Be careful because often you won't realize you are in triple digits. Touch the rev limiter in 4th and you are at 140!
I ordered mine in Jet Black with Fox Red. I was hoping for a true red, but FR is pretty cool, (saw a sample in Germany). I had my E36 in Black w/grey and my E46 in White w/ grey, so I wanted a different interior. |

NJ is BMW headquarters, therefore the place of registration.
