$300k/year in Austin will afford a very comfortable, upper middle class lifestyle. $300k/year in Manhattan is more like $127k/year in Austin.

I wouldnt consider it a isolated area. Just far enough that your away from everything and off the beatin path that no one will just pull up in your drive. I live on the east side most people live on the west side. Most people have no idea this area exists, which is how I would like to keep it.

The low cost of living in Houston sure is attractive, but certainly not enough for me to move there. I'm down there every now and then for my job and it is just too hot, too humid, too crowded, and too flat for my taste.

not really - the density of Houston is some of the best in the nation of a population of over 2 million.

example: take 120 people and put them in the middle of a basketball court - call that Philadelphia or Boston or Miami or San Francisco.

then take 200 people and put them on a football field - call that Houston.

more people in Houston and it STILL doesn't feel as crowded because the area is much bigger.

to prove my point, here is a perfect example.

you'll notice 5 things in this link.

(1) Houston's Metro Area has 5.9 million people in it
(2) it's the 5th most populated Metro Area in the nation
(3) it's population density is ranked 31 out of 50 of the biggest Metro Areas in the nation
(4) Houston only has 4,109 people per square mile
(5) Houston has as many people as San Diego, Las Vegas and Milwaukee COMBINED, but it has about 1500 people LESS per square mile

Good point. It was a poor word choice on my part considering the density. What I should have said was "terrible traffic". I thought traffic in and around Denver was bad until I had to drive in Houston.

i will also agree on that.

being a commuting Houstonian since 1998, i can tell you that a person really has to know when and where to drive if they are on a schedule.

there could easily be 40-50 miles separating the south part of the Beltway to the north part of the Beltway (huge circle around the city).

most major cities aren't even 40 miles wide/long HAHA !!!!

To clarify, I mean street bums.

I was only in Houston for 2 weeks for some work, but I thought they were fairly aggressive in their pursuit for change / money. Especially considering they must have known most people were probably carrying. Though who knows...maybe they were carrying too...

there are bums at damn near every busy instersection here in Houston.

the funny thing is that they are "pan-handlers" feeding off of the generosity of Houston residents.

the real bums actually sleep in sleeping bags under bridges and use shopping carts to keep all of their belongings - real bums mind their own business and RARELY beg for money.

you can tell the difference between a REAL bum and a pan-handler...

that said, i gave a pan handler $5 one day just to take a picture of his sign

i was driving to lunch one day when i see this guy on the street holding a sign that says "faith" - aahh fuck it, i rolled my window down and gave him a dollar.

he then asks me "is this dollar blessed by God ??"

i said "i dunno, it can get you some food though".

he then asks me "so let me ask you - what do you think about gays and lesbians !?!?"

i said "well, frankly, they can be gay or lesbian if they want, i don't care either way".

he said "NO, THAT'S NOT GOD'S WAY - SO I CAN'T TAKE THIS DOLLAR FROM YOU !!!"

so there i was, wondering if i had seriously been trolled by a bum...

either way, he was the reason why i don't hand out any money anymore....

so to any houston bums/panhandlers reading e90post, go fuck your own unwashed asses because LITOS ain't handin out no more cash to any of you cheese dicks....

Pfft, I never give money to any of the pan-handlers, neither here nor in Detroit. At most I would buy them a cheeseburger or give them my leftovers if I was down town. Don't approach me while I am in my car though, I like to enjoy my time in the drivers seat not getting harassed.

Which I'm actually surprised how many pan-handlers I see out here in NC. I feel like I moved into a very nice area, but I still see them on the corners everywhere.

It's the same here around the Denver metro area. It seems like many people have become "professional" pan-handlers due to the potential amount of money they can make, not to mention tax free.
