I hate that he put on aluminum valve covers instead of the oem magnesium.

I think the magnesium covers in the S65 is one of those quirky cool things. Its unique and racey. He did this great engine build to factory spec and then did aluminum covers. I don’t like it.

I wonder if he had some free plug from NRW to do it.

more than likely. double edged sword of up and coming youtubers getting free stuff. i want to see him do well, but definitely makes it harder to trust what he's pushing.

It was fun to watch regardless though! I like watching his videos as white noise while I do other stuff on my laptop.

Yea it was very relaxing. I’ve always wanted a shop big enough to spread out all my crap and take my time on projects I don’t have time to finish. I’d rebuild these for fun…
The problem I have is I don’t have the more technical knowledge like checking clearance and torque patterns.

There is a second video I didn’t get a chance to watch yet, and it looks like it’s him connecting all the other crap to make it run.

What’s the problem here though? Even if NRW gave it away (I would amongst strong and respectived content creators), this guy isn’t endlessly pitching the covers. Just acknowledging they provide a meaningful solution to recurring problem.

I don’t have NRW but wouldn’t sweat it in the slightest.

This is also how I kind of feel about when people complain about plastic parts in cars when a more durable metallic one could have been used. Then followed by complaining about how heavy the new cars are getting.

Having quirky parts and maintenance items is only cool on the exotic cars I guess.

If you're ok with reading english subtitles, these guys in Germany are almost as thorough as Sreten at M539 restorations. They have a few super interesting videos on S65/S85s and they even have a video of a 60k mile S85 that supposedly had 1-2 oil changes. They do incredible work and even do Alu-sil work (they did Sreten's S65)

Anyone every drive the Nurburgring? I'm planning a trip to Germany this summer and gathering info. Hoping to drive a couple laps in a rental or ride along in a Schirmer.

If you can, do a track day, way better than the tourist day (also more expensive). If you are going to do a track day (I used trackdays.de - great group), I would spend some time on a sim beforehand. I practiced on iracing for months before and although I knew the track pretty well, I found it mentally exhausting to drive, so many turns compared to 'traditional' tracks, but well worth it!

I did many years ago. Its relatively easy to rent a prepped car. The tourist days are kind of like...opening an inner city highway loop to the public for racing except 99.99% of the people that show up are mature adults.

I found it super cool to do but exhausting. I did 8 laps in one day and I was totally done.

Yeah but do they have fogging oil for men?

They don't even have carbon fiber towels! Insane that people trust them to work on these engines

i don't mind it. it looks like a good product and helps solve a problem. and if nrw design provided them to him- that is brilliant marketing. look at how many views that video has and what kind of people would watch it... now the word is definitely out. i didn't feel like he was pushing them, either.

that being said, i'd keep the oem magnesium covers as well, mostly to keep the weight down... but at the same time, its a common to upgrade the dct pan to slon or fall line. its definitely heavier than the plastic pan, but solves an issue. its at the lowest part of the car, so not much guilt there.

Random Questions: Does anyone here run bridgestone Re71R's - 285/35/19 - that has one that is mostly used laying around in LA area? I had one cord last weekend at CVR on the outside edge (no idea how this happened other than an alignment issue). I ordered a new set but don't want to put them on until i get the alignment/suspension figured out. I am happy to come where ever you are to pick it up.

Why not put whatever tire fits on there until you get it sorted? Plenty of junk tires to choose from on Facebook Marketplace.
