How about the difference in handling, cornering, steering precision, feedback from the road, overall feel, etc.?

Ever look at the new 6 series vert? Looks very nice and I believe it just barely makes your price range. Also has some rear space for a kid. Beautiful car and fits what you want imo

The handling on the track is not obvious but theres difference on track time. Besides acceleration, it feels almost identical on daily driving

We did try a used M6 vert. Looks nice in a country club sort of way, but not really much more space inside than the M3, and the M3 is way more fun to drive. I assume the M3 would compare even more favorably against the non-M 6 series.

Ok this is very easy. Get the X5M, I like it better than the M3 which is why I bought mine. You can get a slightly used one for about $78k. Then buy a 135i vert.

i sell CTS-V's and i will honestly tell you that gear heads like us the 6sp manual is the way to go in that car. you mentioned having to get an auto tranny. yes the auto tranny works in the CTS-V but the manual is better in my op in that car

just thought i would let you know that. if you do decide to go with the CTS-V i can check your numbers for you or take care of you as well if you like just pm me

the E92 M3 is a great car and so is the 911. those cars are a bit different style power delivery then the C63 which is more brute force

me personally if i had a C63 already i would get a 911 of some sorts. either a C2S or C4S if you want the AWD but i really love the GT3 and GT3 RS

- Preferably under about $100K
- Back seat usable by a ~10-year-old kid for trips up to one hour
- Automatic or automated manual transmission
- Fun to drive (comparable to the C63 or better)
- Convertible would be nice, but not mandatory
- AWD would be nice, but not mandatory

One of the top contenders is the M3, either as a sedan or convertible. I'd appreciate comments on how the two compare as far as performance. I'm willing to give up some performance for the convertible, but not too much. If it's an M3, the idea is to get a real M3.

Thoughts on options other than the M3 would also be welcome. Some candidates are the RS5, new M5, 911, and CTS-V.

As far as convertibles go, nothing else meeting our criteria seems to match the M3. We test drove one and I thought it was great.

Thanks.

Just wanted to let everyone know how the story ended.

As suggested by several people, we went with a 911S cabriolet. Reasons:

- We decided that having a convertible was a must.

- The 911 is pure sports car, and so it complements my C63 well. The M3 vert is great too, but more sedan-like and comfy than the 911, plus a bit too similar to the C63. Because of the low CG, wide track, and decades of design refinement, the handling and dynamics of the 911 are really on a different level than the C63 and M3 (which are excellent too).

- Although the 911S costs more than a base 911, the particular 911S we got is the best looking 911 I've ever seen, plus the S is higher performance, so we can live with the extra cost.

- I've generally been driving automatics, but recent test drives with manuals convinced me that's the way to go with a sports car. No, it's not as fast and easy as a double-clutch, but the manual is more engaging. Makes you really think about what you're doing and teaches you to become a better driver. And I didn't really like the manual in the M3 because the M3 lacks low to mid rev torque, and I don't want to always be obligated to maintain high revs (especially on public roads).

- The rear "seat" of the 911 isn't nearly as good as the M3 vert, but it does the job of accommodating our 10yo daughter on local trips, which is all we really need.

- I've always wanted a Porsche, so this seemed like a good time to get one (in my mid 40s and not getting any younger).

Thanks to everyone for your comments and suggestions. And enjoy your M3s - great car!

Congrats! Enjoy the Pcar! You can't go wrong with either (M3 or 911).
Try to Post up some pics of the 911S

Enjoy! Had a 997s and really liked it (loved the sound of the sport exhaust) Hope your daughter stays small enough to fit back in those tiny seats for awhile - maybe if you give her coffee it will keep her short
