This.

However, give the Porsche some time before making any rash decisions. Pcars are known for this. It takes some time to develop the skill to get the most out of them and to really appreciate the 911 for what it is.

Cheers.

Those cars are completely different from a M3.

The 911 looks better in my opinion but I also hated the attention - that's personal preference though as is the Pcar vs. BMW driving experience (steering feel, build quality, etc.).

The bottom line is that you have taken a depreciation hit on the 997 - it doesn't matter if you sell it now or later. I wish it wasn't the case for you but it's a sunk cost and should not drive your go forward decision. Follow your gut or you'll probably end up regretting your decision (whichever way you go).
Yes it does. The new 991 is being officially unveiled soon, so values could stay about the same or plummet very very fast. enthusiasts are pissed about the changes, so maybe there is a chance that it will stabilize. from what I have been reading, the 911 will feel more mid engined, which is a huge plus in everyone's book (except for 911 enthusiasts apparently ). KKM3, it is time to make an adult decision (sorry). porsche has yet to release a 911 that people didn't like. Even the 996, which apparently is the crappiest 911 released, still was an improvement over the 993...well, in some ways.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.
You're right. I forgot about the upcoming 991 release.

Enthusiasts always get upset about the new models - same as they did with the e9x M3's. If I had to bet, the 997 will take a hit \- 12 months from the 991 release for a private sale - dealers will probably start ripping people off now. Not to mention there will likely be a minor market flood of used 997s from those looking to trade for the new generation.

OP, you touched 2 very different subjects: 'prestige' and 'driving dynamics'. If you're after the former, the 997S is the obvious choice. On the latter, I just never warmed up to the 911. I've driven the 997 enough, and although it's almost a miracle what you can do with all that mass hanging on the back, it just doesn't feel right to me. Maybe the GT3 would change my mind (never driven one), but the physics of it is pretty much the same, so I doubt it. Only P sports car I like how it drives is the Cayman S, but man, that rear looks like crap. If I was offered either one as a gift and couldn't sell it, I'd choose the Cayman S .

Finally, the most important factor on deciding which car to buy is HOW you're going to drive it. If you're not going to be doing any canyon/track runs, the 911 wouldn't be any worse than a Cayman. And looks WAY better. The 911 is probably the best 'prestige' bang for your buck, and drives nicely. For the twisties, even Porsche's 'adaptive' seats leave a lot to be desired IMO, with very little bolster support. But it's reasonably comfortable, has cruise control, and the footbox is relatively roomy.

What I can objectively compare the M3 is with the Ferrari F430. And only place I definitely prefer it is on a canyon road. And I mean to jump in the car THERE . That car is like a sportbike. It's great in the canyons, but to get there and back (for those of us living far away from any twisted road ), it's not that fun after the first time, especially if you don't like the attention. The footbox is VERY small (but there's a dead pedal). So small I can't drive with shoes, even my driving ones are too bulky (I like to drive without shoes on my manual cars ). It's pretty noisy inside, especially with the valves open all the time. And there's NO option of cruise control, so breaks are mandatory. And drives somewhat harsh, even in 'wet' mode, where the shocks are the softest. But on the canyons it's a revelation. You find out real quick this car is no 'poser', like many think it is. Grip, handling, and FEEL are just incredible, and at the limit I'm willing to push it is not even breaking a sweat (in 'sport' mode., which is the middle position in the manettino).

But where I live, I'm on your same boat OP. Not worth having this car. The M3 is almost as fun in the twisties, and IMMENSELY more comfortable everywhere else. And way more practical. Best driver's car bang for the buck IMO. I definitely rate the 997 more comfortable than the 430, but nowhere near the M3. So if you're after prestige, keep the 997. If you want the overall best car, and the better sounding engine, keep the M3 . Good luck.

In choosing a fun car, feeling fast is more important than being fast, unless one is just concerned with (childish) bragging rights.
Agree totally. Objectively, you are comparing two of most legendary performance cars in history with the 911 and the M3. Both great, both different. At this overall level of car, you won't go wrong no matter what you do from an absolute performance standpoint. Get whichever car subjectively gives you more enjoyment/pleasure, everything considered. FWIW, I chose my 2011 M3 over a Nissan GTR, despite the GTR being objectively superior in almost every way from a performance standpoint.

I happened to drive both a 997S cab and M3 vert today, back to back. I would have a tough time choosing between them based on driving pleasure alone, since each has distinctly different strengths, though I give a slight preference to the 997, and I actually prefer the Boxster S to both - now that's a pure sports car!

If you factor in practicality, cost, etc., any of them can win, depending on your priorities. In short, it's really a personal decision.
