Waller County, TX

I spent the 4th of July at a friend’s ranch just north of Brenham, TX. We left pretty early so we would not have to fight the homebound traffic back to Houston.

While there is not really much relief between Brenham and Houston, there are more interesting , and more lightly patrolled, roads. So at Hempstead, I exited and took Farm to Market road 359 to Brookshire.

It is no Blue Ridge Parkway, but it does have a couple of nice curves, and is much more fun than US 290.

My thoughts about the speed traps was not exactly true.

As soon as we got off of 290, we saw a County Sheriff (Waller County there, I believe) coming my way. Luckily, I was still in town, and well behaving myself.

As we got into the country, I was driving spirited, but not recklessly. (I seldom drive recklessly, and never when my wife is with me. As she was yesterday). We were driving down a fairly long and straight part of the drive and I spot a car coming in our direction (I was only doing about 80). Too late, I realized that it was a Texas DPS State Trooper, in one of their little Mustang chase cars. As we got close, he hit his lights.

I hate getting tickets, so my heart went into my mouth.

The excellent, kind, nice, and ever so competent State Trooper just kept on going. He was just sending me a little message to behave myself (the speed limit on that road was 60)

We had a nice drive home the rest of the way. We saw one more county sheriff, and on the whole trip saw FOUR people getting tickets. (That always gives me a strange satisfaction. Shadenfreuda, or should I say, Ticket Freuda)

It was a good weekend!

It is strange that you have satisfaction at the misfortune of others. I openly weep when I see others getting tickets.

You were lucky, never heard of a dps trooper letting anyone go, esp on a no refusal weekend

I certainly know I was lucky.

And I consider my schadenfreuda a character flaw.
