Looks like they're using the full DOF concept you find in iPhone cameras where everything is mostly in focus. The software they talk about is probably just blurring the non-clicked areas. Would be simple enough to program. Just apply a Gaussian blur to any area not clicked.

i will, once i edit enough of them to post. just finally got done going through all of them and removing the out of focus shots. 60% of them were out of focus, haha. it was a painful battle. i need a focusing screen because i love this lens.

and i'll let you guess why the ND filter was used.

I think it's much more complicated than that. From another news source:

"Whereas a normal digital camera captures a snapshot of light hitting a sensor, a light field camera first separates rays of light in order to individually record their color, intensity and direction. This extra information opens up a world of possibilities, including the ability to focus on any depth of field within a taken photo, observe a 3D-type effect even without specs, and boost images taken in extremely low light."

Definitely cutting-edge and novel, imo.

Hmm. Still sounds like hocus-pocus to me. And if you can make any point in the image focused, why not have the whole thing in focus? A print will not be changeable. Anything posted on the web would, in theory, be changeable *if* they develop an HTML script to handle it. But again, why would you want to?

Some years ago I saw a super hi-res image of just a cityscape. Some Euro city, I forget which. But you could really zoom in very tight to any spot and see that spot in hi-res. The whole image was a large shot of the city, and I found one spot where you could zoom in on a window and see a roll of toilet paper sitting on the window sill quite clearly. That image was an amalgamation of many, many smaller hi-res images. But a camera that could take such an image in one shot and have each area of the image available for viewing at such hi-res would be a real breakthrough. Maybe this technology, is there's anything to it, would bring something like that about.

Capture One just got a very positive review in Shutterbug. If I used a medium format camera, It'd be at the top of my list to consider.

I'm guessing because it was too bright out and you wanted stick with an 1.4 f-stop to get the nice background blur..

I do this a lot shooting outdoors with a fast lens and use a Singh-Ray Vari-ND-Duo filter so i can dial in exactly the amount of darkness I need.

indeed, that is correct. i was hoping that was the direction the thread that i started would go, but perhaps this thread would be a better place to post those photos if you guys wanted to know about lighting in sunlight and still retain short depth of field.
took the images out of the thread because of the juvenile comments regarding the model's frame. oh well.

Hey I have a quick photoshop questions for you guys. How do you guys make cars appear really glossy in photoshop, like make the reflections more vivid and detailed? Kind of like this picture:

damnit... I wonder why cameras are not permitted in outdoor concerts? I can understand indoor ones, but I feel like prohibiting cameras for outdoor concerts is going a bit far.

Now that almost every camera has video capacity, many in HD, it's become more of an issue than it ever was. Some venues do permit, but you'll need to check beforehand.

Is there a simple way in photoshop cs4's Camera Raw to batch edit a couple hundred images to change the white balance? I screwed up shooting in "WB Auto," and the camera got it wrong. I need to switch them all to "tungsten" so people don't look like they have massive liver disease....

Do you also have Adobe Bridge available? If so, open the folder in Bridge and pick the first of the files you want to fix and open it in RAW. Make your WB changes and then hit Done. Once you're back in Bridge, pick a bunch of the files to be fixed (not too many at once or it might lock up your machine) and go to Edit => Develop Settings => Previous Conversion. It should take the settings you used for the first image and apply it to the rest. This is how it works in CS5. I don't have CS4 so I have no way to see if it works the same.

At least Nikon is alive and breathing. I just wish Canon would bring production back on line. They must have really taken a beating with the earthquake/tsunami. Lots of places sold out or jacking prices through the roof. Try buying a 60D body for the advertised rebate price of $899.
