E92 M3 MT Clutch / Transmission problem

I had some previous threads going about a gear crunch in my 09 6MT E92 in 2nd and 3rd gears. The dealer had my car for a week and blamed it on air in the clutch lines. They said they bled the clutch and returned the car to me. I didn't want to go back to the dealer with it because they wanted to point the finger at the clutch since they know the clutch is not under warranty.
Recently I've had more trouble with the transmission, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th need a wiggle of the shifter on each shift to get into gear which flat out kills any quick shifting.
Also, a couple times a week I'm unable to select reverse at all without going to first and rolling the car forward an inch or two. The shifter just flat out wont go into Reverse with any amount of force.
Now the clutch doesn't feel as solid as it used to. and I'm wondering if since I purchased the car with 15 thousand miles on it what kind of damage was done to the clutch with air in the lines. I assume the clutch wasn't operating properly and the clutch is worn due to that.
Does anyone have experience with a slipping clutch around 15K miles?
The dealer wont touch it since I'm a second owner and they say anything related to the clutch is out of pocket.
I guess thats one solid reason to buy a DCT M3.

+1 I had the clutch replaced on the house on my E46 325 at 17,000 miles and that was my first manual

So you can become on even better terms with your dealer as you are constantly dealing with your faulty and lurching DCT

Haha 6MT guys are so defensive and obnoxious!

On topic to the OP, there is a synchronizer that aligns the shifter to the gear. It sounds like that is going out or is wore out (besides the clutch its the most replaced part on a manual). Had something similar on a 69 Camaro 4 speed manual which was my brothers car. It simply would not go into reverse. He had the transmission rebuilt. This being a BMW that is probably a costly affair and thus the dealer is trying not to go through that trouble. The transmission has to be taken apart in order to replace it. Sorry to be the harbor of bad news.

I have never heard of that kind of issue. I would go to another dealer. Good luck.

Others have had trannies replaced for similar issues. This kind of a problem after that many miles is ridiculous. It is really highly doubtful that the clutch is worn out. Maybe others can chime in, but I have not read any reports of premature clutch failures or even any worn out clutches - until you have a LOT more miles.

A clutch problem would impact all gears not just a couple. The more I research the more it looks like a synchronizer is worn out.

A clutch issue will show up in the lower gears 1st because the ratio spreads are much wider in the lower gears than in the higher gears. To shift an M3 in the higher gears you can do it quite smoothly & quickly and without the clutch without doing any damage to the the transmission.
I had the transmission replaced in my 08 because a bad 2nd gear syncro but I am convinced that clutch drag contributed to the the problem.

Unhappy BMW owner

Thanks for all the replies my friends,
I'm seeing a lot of different ideas here. Clutch issues, synchro problems, ....synchro problem because of a clutch issue.
When I first took it to the dealer I told them I had a 2nd and 3rd gear synchro pack problem and they sat on it for a week and the end result was "we found air in your clutch lines, we fixed that, so here you go"
Basically air in the clutch doesn't relate to a synchro problem.
The reverse selection is anoter issue. Why do I need to roll the car foward or drift it back out of gear to select reverse. Are there some bad teeth on the reverse gear? I can select the 2nd and 3rd gears, but there is a nasty crunch when I do. Where as reverse will not select with any amount of force without rolling the car one way or the other in another gear.

Again, I purchased the car with 14,200 miles on it in october of 2010 - It's an 09 model which I hear has the two clutch springs compared to the single on the previous years. It is really in top shape. There's not a scratch on it, or a dent, or anything wrong inside. It looks like it was garage kept. The leather has no ripples in it from sun damage. The only thing negative I have to say about it is that I had to put 4 tires under it as they were about 1/16th of an inch of tread on the rears (the markers were showing) and a little more on the fronts. I would have hoped the tires would be good for more than 15,000 miles. They were the original set of tires. Replacement tires from BMW installed ran me a little over $2,100 including the alignment.
I've called the dealer several times over the transmission problem, but they've basically ended each conversation with the point that the transmission is fine and it's a clutch issue which isn't covered. I continue to point out that Synchros are not in the clutch and that the transmission needs to be replaced.
I've streseed in my previous threads how I expected a lot better support from a dealer when I'm driving a $70,000 car. Hell I would get better service from a ford dealer with a $10,000 escort it seems. I expect BMW to man up and do whats right when we're driving one of their flagship cars.
Cheers,
X

I don't understand why there is no warranty. I thought it was 4 years/50k miles regardless of the number of owners? Assuming no one did anything to void it, there should be no issue here.

Well the dealer denies there is anything wrong with the transmission. They say it's normal and/or the problem is in the clutch, which is not covered under warranty. They keep pointing at the clutch since they know they have an easy way out there.

I had same type of issue on my 98 Camaro SS (6spd also). Synchros went out but I ended up switching clutch/ tranny to a Corvette/C5 tranny. That Fixed the issue.

I think you have a bad clutch. Hard shifting in neutral is a classic symptom.

yes the dealership could be stubborn you just have to keep pressuring them to fix the problem. you have to be fierce and show anger. thats what i do when they dont cooperate with me. if they dont agree with you, threaten the service manager that you'll call bmw north america and tell them that dealership doesnt seem they want to fix the problem and that they're giving you the "run around" towards the transmission. tell them you clearly feel that its the transmission and not the clutch. If they still wont comply, actually call bmw NA and tell them your situation, its the best resort. but the dealership will usually comply since the problem to resort to bmw na.

this is how bmw bought back my 335i convertible that i had before, it was an issue that i kept bringing to the dealership multiple times and they kept saying it was fixed when it really wasn't. took me around a year and more than 6 times in service for the same issue. i resorted to calling bmw NA, and thats when things started showing positivity. eventually they gave me a deal and bought back my car
