macht schnell EDC emulator

Hi to all,

I need your help, somehow I managed to misplace the installation instructions for the edc modulator. Could someone send/post them in pdf?

Thanks in advance,
David

Sorry to revive such an old thread but I figured that since I just went through this same thing in looking for instructions unable to find any online I'd post what I got. I would have to also say a big thank you to Tom and the crew at EAS for their help. Without them I probably would still be lost in trying to figure out how to get this thing wired up.

I've attached the instructions but would like to preface that they are rather confusing and maybe also incorrect with their wiring diagram. More on that later. Basically the install begins with removing the right side trunk liner in order to access the EDC module. I found these instructions from EAS very helpful, since the EDC module is in the exact same place as the TPMS module and the instructions for removing the pins from the BMW harness is pretty much the same. Once you've got all that down all you need to know is that the EDC module is the one with two connectors going to it. One white and another blue as shown here...

At this point all that is left is to intercept the proper wires from their respective harnesses. Basically there are six wires to connect. The first two (14ga Red and 14ga Brown) are the easiest and thanks to Tom@EAS help, the hook up was very convenient. As a matter of fact the Macht Schnell instructions don't really tell you where to get these connections. Using my own yellow t-taps (the ones provided in the kit were too small, blue) I tapped into the Red/Green and Brown 14ga wires on the white connector going into the BMW EDC module. Red going to Red/Green and Brown going to Brown. The next 4 wires basically are used to intercept the CAN BUS signal to the BMW EDC module. For this you need to remove the Blue/Red and Red 18ga wires from the blue BMW connector going into the EDC module as shown here...

The next step requires a little thinking. On the one hand this process could be a little easier if Macht Schnell choose to use the same color wires as BMW but they didn't. For the proper connections I would reference you to the table on page 2 of the attached PDF. It is a little confusing especially since page 4 of the PDF doesn't coincide with the table on page 2 so I would say to ignore page 4 all together and follow the pin connections on page 2. Once you've gotten all the wires connected the way they should be I would recomend temporarily connecting all the harnesses up and starting the car to confirm a proper connection. If all is good the green led on the EDC emulation module will flash continually. (for this pic I'm going to have to use EAS's TPMS module pic since I didn't take any but the EDC emulation module looks exactly the same)...

Oh and don't forget to check control messages if you have iDrive...

Isn't the EDC and the DSC all connected somehow?
What is the effect of emulating the EDC have on the DSC behaviour?

From what I understand this EDC emulator just makes the computer think that everything is all hooked up and still operational. Shouldn't affect DSC. It is as if I ordered the car without the EDC option basically.

roycemek, thank you so much for the write-up and link! I'm getting ready to install this in my car and the instructions were horrible. This was the best information I found with the link to the TPMS install. Luckily I found out that I am missing the black "male" connector that I plug the factory wires into and then into the macht schnell harness. Hopefully I can get the part I need quickly. Thanks again for posting this

Little bit of trouble. I should have read your instructions completely as I did the install. A friend of mine did the install (he's a BMW tech) and the only page I got for the install was page 4. He quickly figured out that the harness was done wrong because we hooked it up, blinked green one time, and then did nothing but throw the error on the dash. We rewired it and tried it again with the same result. The only thing different we did was take the red wire to the + terminal of the battery and the brown wire to the - terminal of the battery. My friend laughed because the instructions said the brown goes to PIN31 wire. It says 31 on the diagram because that is an actual BMW diagram. He said 31 means ground and so it should work going straight from the battery. Not sure how to make this thing work now.

Wiring should be the following:

PIN2 from Module >> PIN15 on EDC connector
PIN10 from Module >> PIN14 on EDC connector
PIN3 from Module >> Red wire removed from EDC connector (BMW harness)
PIN11 from Module >> Blue/Red Wire removed from EDC connector (BMW harness)

Power/Ground can be obtained from the white connector:

PIN1 = +12V Power
PIN6 = Ground

Hope this helps.

Tom, thanks for the reply. How does the mini USB port work to switch the emulator on and off? Could that be my problem? I'll check to make sure my connections are what you have listed. I think they are correct except I went to the battery for the power/ground. My tech has been trying to get in touch with Macht Schnell for two days now and hasn't heard back from them.

The USB port is used for updates, there isn't an ON/OFF switch on this module as there really is no need for disabling the module.

Wiring the leads directly to the battery would not cause an issue, verify the CAN leads going in/out of the module are wired correctly.

The CAN leads might be reveresed. At first I had them reversed but switching them around fixed it. You know it is working when the car is powered on the green led will blink rapidly continually.

I got it!!! Tom, thanks for the simple instructions. Is it normal for the EDC button to be lit up like I'm in super stiff mode?

Tom, anyone,

would you happen to:

1) have a wiring diagram for the EDC module? IE what is the total overview of io's vs Pins (# or color) to the EDC module?

If not available would you know what signals are part of the io list:
Connector1 (Color?):
-CanBus (gyro, V, accel),
-Console switch
-Supply/Ground
-?
-?
Connector2 (Color?):
-Drive signal to Shocks [4x2]
-?
-?

2) know what signal type/level drives the shocks magnetic valve.
Assuming analog fixed drive signal, then 0V or NC should equals SPORT MODE (for safety reasons). Normal = ?V and Comfort = ?V

3) know what the shock input impedance is?

above questions related to EDC retrofit research

Module is a gateway design and consists of in/out CAN lines and power/ground.

I have EDC suspension here (takeoff).

Anything can be retrofitted, it depends on your budget. IMHO: It's not worth investing into the retrofit as it is a bit more than just springs/struts alone.

To each is their own, but I can't imagine doing this. The cost of doing it just wouldn't be worth it for what you would be getting. The EDC is pretty good, but not that good.

Hi Tom, can you PM me with price and set details (if not complete with console switch, accelerometers, steering sensor, shock wiring, etc), or otherwise let me know how to exchange more info.

For testing purpose, some assist with wiring and OEM drive signal levels to the shocks is needed. IE could you have access to a functioning EDC setup?

thx, Eeghie

Anyone have a pic of the final EDC module installation? Difficult to follow which wires are to be tapped to which wires etc..

Sorry to revive an old thread but the top two connections above are the opposite of what the euro tuner article says:

PIN 2 >> PIN 14
PIN 10 >> PIN 15

Which is correct?
