how much oil should I add?
My oil level indicator is slightly below the last 1/4 way. I just got the chime that says add more oil. How much should I add to get back to the middle marker? I don't want to add more than that b/c I'm less than 1 month away from my free oil change.
I'm guessing maybe no more than 1/4 of the 1L bottle? I figured since if the indicator is fully low, and you get the "add 1 quart" message and that'll bring you to the top or even overfill, then 1/4 is about right, right? Last edited by mdosu; 06-11-2011 at 12:29 PM. |

When mine ask for a qt. I always add 1/2 of a qt. and it would bring the level up to near the top. I drive it for about 10 minutes and check it again and the level shows at 1/2 mark. I was told to always add 1/2 qt. at a time, not a full qt. Hopefully this will help you.

thanks, so I actually got the "+1 quart" message. So I added 1/4, it still said "+1 quart", I drove for like 10 mins, said the same thing, added another 1/4+, it still said "+1 quart", drove 10 more mins, then all the sudden, the level is 3/4 up on the indicator.
Are you saying it'll drop again shortly? Sounded like I could have gotten away with 3/8 instead.

If you drove it after filling it in, then you are good. It shouldn't drop at all. Well maybe a little, but I doubt it very seriously that it will ask you to add more. You should be fine for a while. How often do you have to add oil? I usually have to add at around 3-5k miles. It also depends on how hard I push her.

Nope that is not bad at all. Every M is going to use some oil, some use more than other. I was told at the dealership by one of the techs, that the M3 can use a qt. about every 2-3k miles. It is concidered normal. So you are doing good. Mine is around 4-5k miles I think. But I don't drive it everyday, so it is hard to notice. Let me know if I helped you any or you have any more questions.
