How to get the Manual Gear Knob off????

i just pulled straight-up... try pulling it like you're doing a dumbbell row. knees on passenger seat, body over shift know... left-hand supporting on driver seat, grab knob with right hand and pull.

WARNING.... some knobs are so tight and might cause you to hit yourself when taking it off. Make sure no one is helping you out removing the knob cause you might knock them out. JUST SAYING.

i've not done it...............

i bought a carbon manual gear knob - but the original has its leather as one continuous piece from the knob right down into the gaiter and it'd mean cutting the leather............ so i'll leave it......... and i've sent the gear knob back........

Smoked my head doing this in my e30. Needless to say it was embarrassing as I came tumbling out of the car backwards.

I punched myself in the face doing this with my E46 m3 and ripped the wires off the lighted part.

be careful! I found that putting the shifter in 4th and pulling slowly is the easiest way. It takes a bunch of force the first time, just be ready to catch it so you don't rip the light wires out.

Wouldn't it be better to disconnect the wires from the vehicle first?

I agree it's a hilarious thread. For the record, I physically assaulted myself while doing this as well.

Bumping this thread since I'm planning on changing out the shift knob. I'm confused though... some folks here say simply to pull up on the knob (as is the case with the E46's), however ibanezking mentions the one continuous piece of leather... so do I need to cut the leather then pull on the knob?
How does the leather connect to the knob?

Just pull up on the base of the shift boot first to disconnect it from the center console. Then pull straight up on the knob and the whole unit will come up.

wait wait dont just pull it...

1.... take the trim around the knob... its very fragile so be careful...

2.... Remove the wire connected to the knob.

3.... once removed (this is when you need to be careful) PULL

Thanks fellas! What was confusing me was the leather that ibanezking mentioned that needs to be cut. So did either of you cut any leather to remove your knob.

I have a Turner Motorsport CF shift knob (for manual tranny) that feels AMAZING to hold (it's the knob I have in my 323i now), so I want to put this in the M3 since I prefer the feel of this knob... hopefully there won't be any issues putting an E46 knob into an M3.

So to go with an aftermarket knob, means you have to cut the leather at the base of the OEM knob to remove it. (You are going to want to remove the entire unit first though; knob and boot) Then you have to use a zip tie to hold the leather in place on the shift arm since it will not be attached to the knob anymore.

Does this make sense?
