Who cares how many M cars they have... just as long as they make a proper one, light weight with high revving engine.. Since they won't make that, again, who cares how many M cars they have.. I'm not really interested in any of them...

Thats getting close to 6er cabrio territory, so to me it doesn't make much sense to do it.

These models will all sell, and I would rather see an X3M, and X4M (even though we have yet to see an X4) than an X5M and X6M because they are much smaller vehicles and would be more fun to drive as opposed to driving a muscle truck (IMHO, and my brother-in-law has an X5M and its scary fast, but too big for that kind of power).

Overall, I do tend to agree that the M division is getting too diluted, BUT if it makes business sense, and the competitors are doing it, they do have to climb on board too.

Times are changing fast, so we either need to follow suit or be left in the dust.
But I can't stop to imagine a z4e89 with the v8 M3e92's engine...

Clearly the M-Division is taking cues from AMG. Doesn't bother me one bit.

Predictions:
M3 Touring won't sell in the USA. Americans prefer SUVs over doofy wagons.
M3 Gran Coupe sounds like an inspired idea and will sell better than today's sedans.
Husbands everywhere will be buying their wives X3Ms secretly for themselves.
All M3 models will continue to get larger and heavier offsetting whatever power increase it can squeeze under the hood.
... and I'll be dropping M3 forever and buy myself an upcoming 1M... the future's only real M3.

If I wanted a monster engine pulling a ton of weight, I'd be driving a V10 M5... or worse yet a S65 AMG. Not my cup of tea.

BMW X3M - 2013

Groundbreaking debut for new M developed engine which will spread across other models.
This must mean N55 variant, which will of course go in the F32 M3. Sounds pretty concrete at this point.

Ah, but he said "future 1M". He meant the upcoming F22 1M, which won't get an N54. Smart money says it will get a turbo 4 cyl, an "S20" or similar.

i donno mkoesel, this whole prediction thing is driving me nutts..and a little depressing too. I never drove a high revving engine before, and now that I got hooked up and was hopping for a 500HP 9000 redline all I hear is I6 and I4and MPG

Bingo, I know my future car will not be the next M3. The current M3 was "almost" to big for me, but the S65 was what finally sold me, that and seeing the MR M3 in the Welt a couple times. I had 3k down on the 1M since October of last year, saw it in the Welt partially reveled in NOV '10, and had been following to rumors since early '10 when it was still a 135is. Then the engine spec were released, and as great as the car is, the "normal" N54 didn't do it for me. I know it is a great car, but I know in the future I can pick up a turbo ///M car, so I went with the M3 since it pretty much is the last of a bred, and it is a car I can see myself keeping for a long time.

next car, F2x 1M or a Porsche.

You didn't get ZCP?! Are you f**king mad, dude? You spent all that money and you still just have a glorified Civic.

I bet the F3x M3 Gran Coupe will have 4 doors but only 4 seats
Hence the word "Coupe". You know, like the X6 is a Sports Activity "Coupe" (only seats 4).

Yeah, that would be sweet, but there's no way that is happening. Efficient Dynamics is BMW's new mantra, and the all-turbo engine lineup is very muched baked into that initiative. I am not thrilled with these changes, but we have to accept it and move on. That means either a 7000RPM turbo-charged engine from BMW, or go elsewhere. The only thing is, if you go elsewhere, you are likely just going to find another flavor of turbo charging or forced induction on top of the same ice cream cone. Everyone seems to be convergently evolving toward the same government-issue powerplant. Rather like some sort of automotive communism, all this.

So sad to see the M brand being diluted...but BMW will still make huge amount of sales.

With the engines losing its high rev and NA we are in the last days of true M cars.

Yes - bank on it. Although I think you can get a five seat X6 now. Or maybe I am thinking about the 5GT - can't remember. Anyway, yeah, I would count on the Gran Coupes sticking with the 4 seat configuration while the sedans continue to offer five seats. So, yeah, that means no 5-seat M3, except for the touring of course.
