Seatbelt Butler Rattle Fix?

I think i've narrowed down my only rattle to be the seatbelt butler rattle. I pushed hard on it with my palm as I drove over rough terrain and that seemed to fix it.

Anyone have a fix before I go crazy with felt tape? No threads mention a fix.

thx

I have had two of these cars with minimal rattles. Don't worry about it.

This is one of the few rattles I had... Fixed it by treating the seals with gummiphledge. Did this twice and it never returned. My 2011.75 doesn't have this issue and it feels as though the seal material has changed from my 2010. Maybe it hasn't but it feels different.

mind taking a pic of the seals you're talking about? in a previous post someone mentioned running a damp microfiber cloth across the rubber seals where the glass meets the frame and that didn't do the trick. I'm positive it is the extender since pushing hard on it seems to make the rattle go away..

3m friction tape has the thickness of electrical tape. Looks exactly like electric tape except the backside is made of a cloth type material. U can buy it at home depot for 2 bucks. And it's in a red packaging and usually in the front of every isle where duct tape is. Because it is so thin, u need to layer it up on top of each other. 3-5 layers depending on how loud the sound is. I will post a picture of this later this afternoon after the bell.

Good to know I'm not the only one going crazy and naming him too.

I don't care what anyone thinks, I do thank him every time he hands me the seatbelt.

I thought it was this too, but I could stop the rattle by pushing on any part of the rear panel. I removed the panel and found a plastic piece attached to the speaker wires that was not set in it's correct spot and was banging against plastic. Easy fix.

i found your DIY..i don't think it's the absolute rear panel. I believe it's coming from the panel where the seatbelt holder is.

No, it's not the rear parcel shelf. There are a few steps to access the panel. I did this initially because I thought it was the seat belt butler as well, but when the panel is off, you can tap on it and see where it's coming from.

-Remove the rear bottom seat cushion by pulling up to release two clips on the outer sides of the front lip of the seat.

-Remove the side seat bolster by pushing it up into the rear seat belt housing cover and then pull out. You have to release a pin tat is about a half inch long on the bottom of the bolster.

-You may or may not need to remove the C pillar, as the panel slots in to a piece of it, but if you do, remove the airbag clip and unscrew with a torx screwdriver (maybe T20) and pull in towards middle of car to release two clips.

-To remove panel, take off the trim (carbon leather, titanium, whatever you have) to expose two screws, also torx.

-After removing the two screws, reach down to the bottom of he panel and simply begin to pry it out away from the car body to release 4 or 5 clips as well as the ones up by the window.

-Once out, the only thing attached is the speaker wire, so check out and see if that plastic piece is attached and not slotted in to it's place, or see if the speaker is buzzing, whatever you find, and use some felt tape to silence it.

-Let me know of any questions

i've not been able to hear the rattle w/ the window down which means it's either the window seal or the engine/road noise drowns it out..do you recall if you were able to hear it with the window down?

Hard to hear with window down...from what I recall. Taking the panel out is a 20 minute deal

tape the rubber seal that is right up on the body of the car...not on the door...and stop right exactly where the door touches the car...i did not apply this tape to where the framless window touches the seal...hope this make sense...crappy iphone pic

ok. the friction tape trick did nothing. I'm positive now it's not the door seals.

Rich, I followed your tutorial and pried open the side panel. OMG what a pain in the ass. Not sure if it was because it was hot out, bad lighting, or such a cramped space to work (or all the above) but that was downright torturous to do.

What I discovered after tapping all over the place:
- there is a little round plastic threaded grommet (that has a speaker wire attached to it) was out of place. But I doubt it was the culprit since it's plastic
- my best guess was that it's the back of the speaker and/or the butler assembly hitting the rubber mat that is glued to the frame of the car that causes the rattle (reverberation against the frame). There seems to be a little bit of space between the rubber mat and the frame and that gap needed to be filled in
- I went crazy with felt tape and pretty much anything that wasn't backed by the fill-in sponge got some tape

Tomorrow will be the test drive. Will report back. Fingers crossed.
