Dealer Called me for 1,200 mile service?

I have had my 2011 M3 for almost a month and have less than 700 miles on it.

The dealer called me for the 1,200 mile service and I asked if it was ok to perform the service early if I did not reach the targeted miles. She said it is ok.

I also asked if I could now drive above 5,500 RPM's (break in) and she also said it was ok.

I am a little concerned about having this done early. What would you do?

dont listen

just keep plugging away, you only have 500 to go. early, for example, at 1100, would be OK but 700...too early

and dont drive above 5500 rpms. the user manual + windshield sticker + sticker on air intake + m3post knows more than whoever you talked to

I would wait till you are closer to 1200 miles to perform the service. I would also not listen to the dealer and go with what is in the owner's manual for the break-in period for the car.

My car had it done around 1100. I would suggest not doing so any earlier.

I had mine done about 400 miles "late" which I'm sure was fine since I kept it under 5500 the entire time, but I wouldn't get it done early.

you don't have to do it at exactly 1200 mi as it's not like the engine just magically gets broken in at 1200... but that's the range

so 1100-1300

i did mine at 1150 if i remember right

o and don't go over 5500 rpm.

using the 3 letters s h e should tell you why you shouldn't right away

(i kid i kid)

DONT LISTEN TO DEALERS. Not just about this, about anything else. I'm glad you asked the forum first. The whole idea of the 1200 service is to give the engine this much time (miles) to break in and release some metal particles that the oil change clears up. Going earlier cheats the engine then you keep more particles in the new oil for 15000 miles.

Doing it at 700 is absolutely fine.

It depends on what the service counter says when you first start the car. Does it say it's due? It was done on my car at about 750 miles.

5,500 RPM is fine as well. No reason to baby it at this point.

it doesnt hurt to wait and not rev it at 5500.... no matter what they say i would just wait around 1100 just below 1200 before taking it in. or if your minder is telling you.

I just had mine done at around 975, but the car was a month and a half old. The service alert had warned me beginning at about 850 and when it was done it was technically 25 miles over the computers suggestion. Since the determination is not strictly by mileage alone as is with normal oil intervals, I went ahead and did the service as the computer suggested. My initial driving was almost all short, non-highway miles.

I think your car starts giving you the 'service required' notice at about 700 miles and will also automatically notify the dealer. That's why they called you. Project about the time you will hit 1200 miles and make an appointment. Don't do it sooner. Good luck.

This is the advice I would take.

There's so much power below 4000 rpm I hardly need to go redline. I don't know why people complain about this car being sucky for city driving
