Day/night CIC - auto mode?

So, I noticed that there is a bit to flip to allow the e9x CIC iDrive to enable an auto mode... but it doesn't work. Works fine on the 5 series and 7 series.

I'm curious, has anyone figured out if there is a missing piece of hardware?

I can't imagine there being one, as the car knows if the lights are on or off and it has light sensors for brightness of the iDrive screen. Seems silly to have another component to do that... Is there another module that has to be coded?

Thanks all!

Any chance you have traffic map enabled? As far as I know, you need to have this disabled to make the day/night maps work.

Best regards,

The Automatic Day/Night mode so far is not supported in the 3-Series iDrive. However, there is a coding variable that can be enabled in the CIC and then the Auto mode option is displayed in the screen, but it does nothing when selected.

easiest way around this for me is to dedicate one of my memory buttons on the center console to day/night mode...

Yeah, we enabled the option and select auto mode and it doesn't work. Was looking for guidance as to why and how to get around it

I knew it wasn't going to work (and yes, I tried disabling traffic, to no effect). Was hoping someone had figured it out.

I can't think of much that should be different, we played with the ambient light sensor (could get the headlights to come on but not the night mode). Seems really silly especially, at least for me, tying it into the headlights would be just fine.

I stand corrected, thanks technic.

My guess is that either the CIC firmware does not have the support itself or that an additional ECU (like the instrument cluster-Kombi) has a variable that also need to be coded to make the automatic Day/Night functional in the 3-Series CIC.

I looked into this some time ago and I could not find anything even remotely related in any ECU to make it work, however that was like 3 CIC updates ago.

I would really like to figure this one out also. Perhaps it's tied to the dimming function of the nav when the headlight is on? When headlights are turned on, the nav would dim a bit. Perhaps we need to disable this dimming for the auto day/night to work. Does anyone know if there is a line in any of the ECU that control the dimming? Just guessing around.

bumping a slightly old thread..

was wondering if there's a way to code the nav night mode to turn on/off as the headlights/xenons (if in auto mode)...My wife's honda pilot has this feature, don't see why BMW's can't do something that simple...

t.i.a...

Yeah my aftermarket pioneer in my Nissan has this, too. Its actually a terrible flaw in all BMW nav that it doesn't have it (CCC) and doesn't do it automatically (CIC). Boo. Bump.

Unfortunately there is no way to do that, and only the 5 & 7 (possibly X models) support the automatic choose of Day/Night mode.

I have made my FM/AM and MODE buttons shortcut buttons, so now I have 8 total. I use the FM/AM one to toggle night and day mode

The reason why it doesnt support auto night mode is because for some reason the CIC screen for the E9x series doesnt come with a light sensor at the bottom of the screen. On my CCC or the CIC screen from E60 they both come with a plastic screen that protect the led screen. On the bottom of the screen there is a light sensor.

If you look at the CIC screen from a E60 it comes with the plastic lens that covers over the housing. In the middle there is a tiny pin hole where the sensor is located. I noticed this because when I retrofitted my CIC unit into my 2007 I wanted the plastic housing over my screen, so I retrofitted the housing onto my new cic screen taking it from the CCC screen. Well thats when I noticed this light sensor. It unfortunate that the circuit board from the E9x cic screen is a drop different than the E60. That is the only difference and hence thats why E60s can have auto night mode available and we cant....We have a slighty different cic board than E60

Look at the pic...On the left of the flash bulb reflected on the screen, there is a small pin hole on the bottom. That where I took out the light sensor that was attached to my CCC screen. I looked at E60 CIC screen which has this lens and it also has this tiny pin hole..

Why would a light sensor have anything to do with it? Audi does it based on whether or not your headlamps are turned on.

What happens on the Audi when a person drives with the lights on in the daytime?

All I know is that I am positive, as I took my old CCC to retrofit the cover into my new CIC screen...I wanted the plastic cover to protect the CID screen. When I took it apart I notice this light sensor. I also looked at CIC screen from E60 and indeed it has this sensor in the front (little tiny hole in bottom center of screen)

Why do you think E60 is able to have this coded to work!
