According to the instructions, K40 Radar Receiver has to be mounted in the open with out anything blocking it, just like Laser Jammers.
http://www.k40.com/filebin/pdf/WIRING_360-200.pdf

So if you place V1 or Escort right next to K40 Radar Receiver, the detection will be equal.

Proper testing has to be done. Other wise its pointless to argue and above videos are irrelevant. Thus everything that was stated here about K40 is nothing more then personal Opinions.

Excuse me? What do you mean NOT BUILT IN? It is indeed built in. You don't have to buy anything extra or configure anything.

Cheers.

Exactly. Find someone in your area with a radar gun (and/or lidar) that knows how to use it and test it against other detectors/jammers on the same course on the same day. I've done this and I know what the results are. Have fun.

Cheers.

Price including install?

I'm being quoted 3880. This is for k40 rl360. They didn't mention laser jammer. This seems way too high as product is only 1800... I have in my 911 turbo and love it...it was already installed in that car when I bought it so I don't know what it cost...

You know what I meant. Stealth installed, full time on. Not a removeable unit. Too much crime. I need a unit that is always on and not visable at all from the outside.

I am not arguing whether K40 has better detection than Valentine or Escort. I merely am saying it is the only remote mounted fully built in stealth installation that has both front and rear detection. IMO, and I am in my mid40's using radar for almost 30 years, in the state of New Jersey, you need rear radar. My K40 will be better (because it detects rear radar) than any other unit unless the other unit has a dedicated rear antenna such as the V1. But, the V1 is not a built in unit. It is easily smashed and grabbed.

Ok, I see what you mean. To me "built in" means that it comes with the car from the factory. The K40 still has to be fully installed but once installed it will be as if the car came that way, assuming the installer does a good job. The V1, OTOH, sits on the windshield.

The Escort 9500ci and Passport Qi 45, as well as the Beltronics STi-R+ and R45 are also "built in" units. However, I would only consider the 9500ci and STi-R+. Even though they have no rear facing antenna, they are still sensitive to radar from the rear so don't be so eager to dismiss them as having inferior performance from the rear without testing them. These two hold up well in tests, even from the rear.

Good luck. Unfortunately, you live in state that still uses X-band radar. Most, if not all detectors allow you to turn this band off to cut down false alerts. But since NJ still uses X-band you shouldn't do this.

Cheers.

I've owned quite a few detectors over the years and I currently have a RL360 without the laser diffuser installed in my '09 C300. It's a very nice detector and have noticed excellent range. If you do go with the K40, go over all the install details with the installer! I actually let someone else install my K40 in my C class, and they did a good job with the exception of the LEDs. They put my LEDs in the gauge bezel pointing down. In daylight, I can't see them at all and at night, the light is quite blinding! I recommend finding someone who will remove the gauge cluster and install the LEDs behind an indicator, such as the turn signals. That way you can see it fine during the day, won't blind you at night and is totally stealth.

I also own Escort 9500xi and a Solo S3 detectors but I will most likely get an RL360 for my M3, but I'll install it myself!

Dogears, it doesn't matter if the K40 has a rear detector antenna, a properly installed Escort or Beltronics radar detector with only a front facing radar antenna will detect radar origiating from the rear of your vehicle better than the K40. I am not far from you and have access to every police radar guns (x, k, and all three Ka bands 33.8, 34.7 and 35.5) if you ever want to test.

I bought my car used with a K40 jammer installed. The guy that sold me the car said it cost 2k.

I am/was a cheap person. But, I usually believe that you get what you pay for. I have owned a cheap radar detector in the past and it did not work early enough. All it did was tell me "Hey, you just got caught speeding, so you can pull over now." It's like adding insult to injury. It never did anything other than that.

This jammer gives you a few seconds to slow down by essentially blocking the first attempt by the laser gun to check your speed. Also, it detects radar signals early, aimed at other cars from very far away. This gives a few seconds to slow down before within eye shot. The audible voice will say if the radar signal is from the front or rear. When a signal is detected, blue lights flash from the steering column to alert, very hard to miss and you can put the volume on mute to just see the blue lights with no voice. Everything is very well hidden. The only thing you could find would be the 4 inch box in the driver's side door compartment on the bottom that tilts out like 45 degrees.

I drive pretty fast and I don't have a ticket in 9 months of owning an M3. It's slowed me down about 30-40 times. I don't believe that it has ever been wrong. The only thing I worry about is motorcycles with no radar signal.

Stress is a killer. I have peace of mind and it's worth the money if you have it.

What do you mean "motorcycles with no radar signal". Do you mean cops on motorcycles that pace you to get your speed?

Even with detectors and jammers, you're best countermeasure against getting a ticket will always be your situational awareness. Detectors can help, but you still need to keep your eyes peeled. I've been saved many times by the V1, but even more times by spotting law enforcement officials from far away by keeping a good visual scan. I pick them up before the V1 since they are usually saving their radar/laser shot for instant on.

Cheers.

Since this thread has resurfaced, I did some more reading of posts and wanted to comment on a statement made by KGB7. The radar receivers DO NOT have to be "mounted in the open without blocking it." The installation manual actually states:

"RECEIVERS MUST BE INSTALLED HORIZONTALLY. DO NOT OBSTRUCT UNIT
FACE WITH METAL, CHROMEPLATED PLASTIC OR CARBON FIBER".

I have mine installed behind the bumper skin and mounted to the top of the carbon fiber bumper. I did use a dremel tool to enlarge one of the carbon fiber notches to get rid of some obstruction, but it is mounted behind the plastic bumper skin. The rear antenna is mounted under the passenger's-side taillight and the front is mounted under the driver's-side headlight. I included some pics for reference.
