Porsche 911

Hi all, my friend has a 911 s and a m3 . He invited me on a track day. I had 1 hr runs in both cars, these are my experiences and opinions. The 911 was really light in the front. The front was hopping and bouncing all the time. It understeered during turn in and wasn't as neutral as the m3. But the 911s exit was superior, it had instant grip unlike the m3 which had a little bit of oversteer. M3 was more comfortable in my hands so I have a better lap time. It had better steering feel but the chassis wasn't as involving. The sound is really intoxicating. If I were
To buy one it would be the m3. This was at limerock

Having owned both cars, I would say your experience is typical. All 911 platform cars are light in front, and tend to have the “porpoising” effect in a turn, which is probably your reference. And yes, slow-in-fast out is fine, but if you are slow enough to cancel all this characteristic, then you’re too slow. It’s just something to drive through, and you get used to it soon. Compared to the neutrally balanced M3, it is indeed disconcerting at first. As mentioned, the 911 has a ton of grip under acceleration, but it also has very significant understeer during that same phase of the turn. I would often have to lift gently at some point during the exit in order to get some additional rotation. In comparison, the M3 is so easy to simply come on throttle hard and manage the oversteer with steering and throttle to maintain a neutral drift on exit (assuming DSC is off). Once accustomed to it, I found the 997S more fun to drive on track, but without doubt more demanding. But for a heavy sedan, the M3 does an amazing job.

Very limited experience with the non-GT 911S (997.2) model. I had the same feeling about the front end you discribed here. The 997.2 GT3 RS however is more planted, feels better on the track. I cannot say anything about the older GT versions but it seems the splitter is doing its work on the 997.2 RS.

The 911 in experienced hands that know how to use the 911's handling attributes will come out on top. My .1S had the same feeling of the front end bouncing around, but as others have said the .2S really dialed a lot of this out. The grip from the rear of the car is just phenominal vs. the M3. I find the M3 is looking for traction all the time regardless on how good the diffy is on the car. Even with larger 285's out back on my M3 it is easy to drift the M3 while the 911 you really have to be hamfisted to get the rear end to come around.

Slow in and fast out is the way a 911 is to be driven. You are on the gas earlier on exit than you would be in an M3 and you are blasting down the straight away.
