How many posters in this thread have kids?
I didn't say that you would sue, and i don't doubt that any sane person would put their kid in check. This is not the case here, and anybody cop or not does not want to lay their hands on someone else's kid, cops in particular have their actions over scrutinized by everyone and they know that pepper spray does no physical harm. They made the right choice in this case.

FYI, I do have a kid, I did buy my own cars.

NO 8 year old deserves to be pepper sprayed. There are other ways to deal with little shits, but its definitely NOT pepper spray
+1 I agree. It's not his fault. What's scary is soon he will be capable of killing someone and potentially nothing will be done to treat his mental state between now and then...

On the other hand, pepper spray isn't exactly the most dangerous substance, though definitely a scary one. Why scare a bunch of kids in an elementary school?

You're right.

They shoulda kicked the shit out of his face.

EDIT: I do have kids. And if they ended up like this, I'd kick my own self in the face. Pepper spray is fucking weak anyway. I don't understand what anyone is bitching about. He's lucky he didn't get a baton.

Yeah I don't know what the big deal is really. The kid looked fine. It's not like they shot him in the leg or something.

The OC spray method probably helped to teach him a lesson.

On a side note, easy on the tags boys. Some of the tags have been dispatched of. It does not matter if you attack someone by way of post or by way of tag, it is still an attack. Consider that holding a new component of E90post common law.

I'm a little over 16 (a bit over three times over) and have been able to buy my own cars since 1970. I also have 27 years law enforcement experience. And my own children (at least, I assume they are).

One of the most common fallacies in the 'civilian' world is that any cop can take on any resisting subject and physically subdue same without causing harm to either, all by himself. If he uses any force, he's a brutal bullying bastidge; If he tries and fails and/or gets hurt himself in the process, he's a p*ssy. If it takes more than one cop to do the job, they're a brute squad.

One of the most common TRUTHS about subduing someone, and I mean anyone, who doesn't want to BE subdued is that causing injury is common. If you've never been in a fight of any kind beyond a simple schoolyard pushing match, you have NO idea what physically subduing another human entails.

This 8-year-old is quite capable of resisting being subdued; Just how much resistance he can put up is up to him, and he is only limited by his pain threshold--which, by the way, is what 'subduing' someone physically means: Finding out how just much pain they're willing to endure to avoid being subdued. A stubborn, angry child can choose to take an awful lot of pain, or go to the extent of suffering a greenstick fracture of a limb in a frenzied tantrum where mental control has been lost.

I have to admit, being 'sprayed' is a miserable experience. It passes, within minutes. Getting a dislocated shoulder, a broken arm, or fractured wrist is likewise miserable, and takes a lot longer to 'pass.'

You choose--you want me to grab your little hysterically-struggling darling and tie him into little knots to calm him down, or give him a little dose of pepper spray that takes his mind off the tantrum (and pointed stick) and inspires him to peaceful cooperation?

I go with the pepper spray.

this is from a study for the nypd:

The Patrol Guide advises officers to avoid using pepper spray against persons who appear to be in frail health, young children, women believed to be pregnant, or persons with known respiratory conditions.

and one can read further the studies which corroborate the above conclusion that pepper spray's effects are more deleterious to children than adults, and thus more likely to cause more long term damage.

The bigger question: why is the mom defending such crappy juvenile behavior from her crappy son?
'Avoid' does not mean 'you can't use the stuff.' I personally wouldn't recommend using pepper spray on the young--unless they are going to really, truly try to resist STRONGLY and maybe get hurt in some other way, and/or hurt someone else in the process. The average 8-year-old such an 'avoid' recommendation was designed for doesn't behave like this; This twirp is a mean, nasty little customer. All bets are off when you exceed the 'norms' of a recommendation.
In this case, it worked. Junior lived with no permanent harm, no cops got injured, and his momma got her 15 minutes of fame. All's well that ends well.

If I had children I would obviously not want them to be pepper sprayed. However I think if it was a choice between possible injury to the cop (never 0%) and just an hour or so of irritated/painful eyes of my kid that is enrolled in a school for kids with issues I think I would choose the latter.

I have a 18 month old daughter.
I would be devastated if someone pepper sprayed her in the face, but I would be even more devastated if I had raised a monster like that little kid.
His issues far exceed just being angry that day. He has mental issues, I am no doctor, but he appears to be bipolar.

Someone needs to tell that Mom to wake the hell up and get her son some help before he he is either in jail for murder or dead himself!

I only have one son and I'd put him out myself if he ever tried to pull this kind of crap just for attention. However, i think this kid has some sever personality disorder and his behavior can not be simply dismissed as part of being a spoiled brat. Still, it does not relieve the parent(s) from their responsibility of making sure their offspring is not a menace to society though. If he's sick in mind, get him the care he needs. Don't let others suffer from your laziness and lack of care.

Ok Solefad - come back in. Many posters with kids. Response please

I agree with SandyDog's response (and btw SandyDog - I *always* travel at the posted speed limits for sake of clarity - anybody who tells you otherwise is probably being honest...)

Re-iterating my point - lack of corporal discipline has caused this, and this needs to be re-instituted in North America. Wish I could go somewhere where the government didn't feel it had the power to meddle in my own personal life.
