Also, since it is so near and dear to my heart, what are you guys using when you want to reach out a little farther? I have a Blaser LRS2 in .308.
Lucky =[ I go about every week to get away (from phone calls no signal up there LOL).. but closest range is only 200 yards =( we have a 600 yards one further one but its a 40min drive away =( sigh socal...

I am confused by your question sir.

You do not need to be affiliated with the military/police to own any of the rifles pictured in this thread.

Any type of semi-automatic assault rifle (AR-15, AK47, etc.) is completely legal.

If the rifle is a SBR (short-barreled rifle, usually shorter than 16 inches), in my state, you must acquire a tax stamp (via the ATF) to legally own the SBR. The same goes for fully automatic weapons and for suppressors/silencers that will be used with the weapon.

As far as the "home security" part, I wouldn't probably use the AR-15 in a home defense situation unless the shit really hit the fan, because I probably wouldn't want to deal with the near-certain hearing loss (not total, by any means) that would result from firing that weapon indoors without hearing protection.

Oh man that's a tough choice. Those SCARs are really nice (and really expensive). An SBR AR-15 build would require a little bit more work, but would be very well worth it also. What length you thinking?

DD M4V3 and Remmy700

That's a fine looking DD M4V3. I'm biased though (see 1st post of thread ).

How do the swat/military guys protect their hearing then, I don't think they wear hearing protection?

I think they do. I can't speak for SWAT, but as far as the military is concerned, I think some type of earplug/hearing protection is a standard part of the uniform in that our soldiers are issued some form of hearing protection (now, not necessarily in the past). Whether they wear them in combat, who knows.

I'll play too. My RRA 16" Mid length. I'm a student, so the mods are coming slowly.
