This is a screen shot (from my iPhone) of the Carfax for my 07 335i. It was in an accident in which the whole front end was heavily damaged. The insurance company repaired it, with a cost of (just shy) of $30,000.00
Now, tell me what it says on the first line... |

Agreed. When I sold my 325i the carfax said my car was in an accident. It wasn't. Trying to get the carfax updated has proven to be nearly impossible. Guilty until proven innocent and you can't prove your innocence. I have a new and unfavorable opinion of carfax.

Not really. Problem is Carfax (and all other similar services) get their information from police reports, not insurance companies, so accidents without a police report are not detected. Having said that, the ultra great majority of accidents disabling a car will most likely be caught by police and get reported. In my case, I hit a cattle guard after catching black ice from a freak storm, causing a $10K claim (purely cosmetic damage), but car drove like before (no mechanical damage at all), so just drove home. And nothing shows up on Carfax or others; that's why I now know insurance companies don't report anything. Take care.
