you can remove it, you just need to open your door to do so

I've gone to a few places (radio station) where my remote did not work so I had to use the key in both the door and to start the car

Yea I ordered this part thinking the old one would just snap off and could snap the new one one covering the keyhole unless you needed it... Like my old car.
Nope! got to remove the whole key lock, which im simply not going to do because batteries die in car and in your remote unlock.

You don't have to do that, you can install the lock mechanism into the new cover and install it that way. That is how I did mine, in an emergency the cover could be broken off.

Like others... I left the locking mechanism in place and installed the cover over it.

delocked my 2010 car and the battery died, pain in the ass. my 07 that was stolen did have the boot lock, didn't realise they had deleted on later models.

I have a fly lead hidden under the car that I can re-power the car through now

The battery is not the only consideration. I had the door actuators go out on my '07 335 and had to use the key to get into the car. When the actuator goes out so does the fuse which disables the pass side as well. It was common on the '07 335s and BMWNA covered it even though the car was out of warranty, they ended up replacing both.
