In a mean time...why is it such a great accomplishment not to have the terrorist attack in 5.5 years??? We've done it before, why is this now so great??? What did you expect -- the 9-11 to happen every month? Ah, yes, I get it, the GWB played that FEAR card on us and now everyone thinks the terrorists will act on weekly basis... |

Its by no means a "great accomplishment" not to have terror atacks in 5.5 years, thats what the government is supposed to do, but in this day and age terrorists are using more conventional means to try to attack us. On that note, adapting to these means and foiling them is an accomplishment in its own respect. Yes some are going to argue, thats what the FBI/CIA is supposed to do, but think about it this way; the terrorists have the upper hand. They are the ones who are creating these new terror tactics and it is our job to find them and foil them. That there is the big accomplishment. It shows that our Federal Gov has gained some of the inter-department communication that analysts and former gov't officials said we had lost around the 9/11 time.

We all would like to believe that we have the upperhand on terrorists, but the reality is we will always be one step or in line with them and to be quite frank, thats not good enough. I dont know if it will ever be possible to be ahead of them unless we eliminate them, and IMO that is the only real way to guarantee our protection and freedom in this country. I know most of you dont agree with the reasons we were told we went to Iraq, but I am almost certain all of you agree that removing these terror cells or at least the heads of these terror groups and countries is a must on keeping this country and our allies countries safe from more and (god forbid) possibly worse attacks.

Then that freak tried to light up his shoes...we then, and only after that made everyone take their shoes off... That is no intelligence work. My 2-year-old knows if something hurts her the first time not to touch it any more... |

You made some very vaild points, and I agree. The problem is, if we were to do these Israel-like airport checks pre-9/11,(for the record I am not against these checks) we would have been called out by every civil rights activist group ever created. The shoes thing, that was pure our CIA/FBI's fault for not doing their research into different forms of bombs. For all we know they did research this and found it to be an inviable option. Again that is one of our countries biggest faults, lack of communication between our intelligence departments. If we can reform our Intelligence department to where they are all on the same page and have a uniform system to share their info.
Thats all for now, Doug

everybody's doing it because everybody else is. similar to the dot com era. if the real estate market crashes, a lot of people are going to be in deep doo doo.
don't forget 9/11 happened on w's watch. personally, i don't feel any safer now then i did before. but i am thankful nothing has happened since then.

If one trys to postulate that somehow engaging in the war in Iraq has prevented terrorist attacks at home, I then ask what has been gained?
In 9/11 we lost around 3000 people who were killed. Thus far in the war, over 3000 Americans have been killed. Its kinda evening out. And at a cost about 1000 lives per year to prevent a terrorist attack (if thats even possible), I think we'd be better off not fighting a war, and using our resources as best possible. Even if we had one terror attack every 10 years, fewer Americans would die then are dying at the current rate. We're sending Americans to their deaths just to prevent Americans from dying, doesnt seem to be making a lot of sense to me.
