Cool Ice Gymkhana fun

This was my first organized driving event ever, and I had a blast. And I was terrible out there running the track! Of the M3s out there, I had the only E9x. There was a black E46, and a couple of E36s (?), one green, one orange.

FOX 31 showed up, and saw a short report air on the news right after getting back.

There were a few guys taking lots of photos with some nice cameras. I don't know where or when they might be posted.

Anyway, if you ever were thinking of doing this, don't hesitate next time. (But dress warm! The sun doesn't clear the ridge until late in the morning.)

I did this a few years ago in my 330ci. It was terrible, even with snow tires - the only guys who did well were in AWD and/or studded snows - fun though. I can only imagine that an E9x M3 is so overpowered that there's no traction.

I did it 2 winters ago in my 330xi (also my first club event) and had a blast. Although we were out on a sunny day & some nasty "potholes" developed. My husband made me promise never to sign the M3 up for it. Glad you had fun!! Saw the report last night and was looking for you - seems they spent more time zoomed in on Audi's than bimmers.

It didn't feel like I had too much power. I tried normal mode, with M drive, and with traction control fully off. M mode was the best.

But in the end, it was the driver, not the car, that failed me.

llis, don't see you in this one either, but there's an E46 M3 giving it a go.

Yeah, I missed out on fame and glory on television and video. I defer to the better ice drivers.

Actually, I was more interested in pushing the limits rather than booking great times. When ice surprises, it's usually at or over the limits and I wanted a sense of what the car would do. Puttering slow is effective for the race times, but I'm not likely to be puttering when black ice unexpectedly puts the slip on my tires on the highway. I've driven in icy winters for many years now, but rarely have had the chance to deliberately push the limits (safely) to get the feel over the line.
