My 2 cents on Chris Bangle cars.
As the BMW range is updated and the new designs are rolled out, I have noticed one thing about them. They all have a generic family look. Not that there is anything wrong with them, I think the look great. However I can't help but think that the previous BMW range( and some still current ) will end up going down as some of the companies best designs. They may not have all been lookers, but they were interesting at the least. The best part for me was you could tell each model apart from the next where as with the new 5 and 7, besides for little differences, the untrained eye can't tell them apart. Chris Bangle may have took a lot of heat, but I think he was brilliant.

I agree and admit I was wrong. Pre-Bangle era was good times, the e46, e39 and rest had family resemblance but was still wonderful. Bangle shook it up. His style was controversial and distinct across the line. In doing so designs look unnatural and unsightly in few models.
Seems like BMW over corrected and all the new vehicles are design like Lexus and Mercedes, bland on the extreme but uncontroversial and generally accepted.

did you guys know that bangle designed the e46 3 series and e39 5 series before the controvercial ones and he also pened the rolls royce!
he didnt just draw the loopy crazy designes but they are the ones that made him famous! now he didnt really design them, as their were designers making the designes but he directed them to a final look, as with all cheifs and design directors they dont draw anymore when they get to that level they just orchastrate and the designers draw up what looks good to him and he works with them to fine tune things. so all in all its a team effort but one man get's all the credit! ![]() Last edited by -c-; 01-23-2011 at 01:21 AM. |

That was his duty for the remainder of his career at BMW; to supervise the whole design team and influence an overall common language.^
He didn't really pen many individual models.

Bangle did a good job but I find the previous 5 hideous, I think the new one is much better.
However, Bangle or not, even though it is over 5 years old, I will choose an S-Class over a 7 anytime. When it comes to big saloons Merc is still the daddy, and BM the boy. The 7 looks like a Corolla. |

I will have to respectfully disagree with you on the new 7 Series looking like a Corolla. And even though the S-Class is a fine car I would still want a 7 Series.

Certain designs were right on the money. Some were not.

Having been driven around in them quite a bit, I can tell you they feel cheap on the inside and bloated on the outside.

The only Bangle car I didn't really like was the 7-series, the rest looked great.
I don't like how BMW is uniforming their designs like Audi. The only way to tell them apart will be which car is longer. |

Has anyone seen this TED video of Chris Bangle? It's a great watch for BMW lovers. Easy to tell just how passionate he is about designing cars. The Z4M coupe may be his best work, though I could be biased.

I have the same positive opinion about Chris Bangle. The current 5-series looks really bad in my opinion. It has no personality. The previous 5er looked much better. The current 7 series looks a bit better but not by much.
The only design of Bangle that I don't like is the 1-series. That is really hideous. |

....realize that Bangle's "Flame Surfacing" design was so influential that it was copied by other car makers...such as Lexus, Mercedes, Infinity, Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Nissan.
These are his memorable designs for BMW. http://www.bmwmonitor.com/blog/10402...top-10-designs |

I maintain that after 5 years the S-Class is still a better looking car than the new 7. The S just oozes class from the outside, and really, when buying such a big car who cares if it doesn't have the nth degree of handling ability? It's a better riding car anyway. I love the new 5. But of the Bangle cars I think the previous 6 is far better than the new one - which looks like your quintessential RUC - Rich Uncle's Car. Not that I have anything against them, rich or poor |

I actually think the new 5 looks good but bland compared to the old one. It feels they just tried to make it more main stream to get more buyers. The new 7 is a huge improvement I think and looks like a luxury sports car which S class is not and I think appeals to a completely different buyer. The S class is more about a car that you want to be driven in when you are 60 and successful. The new 7 is the car you want to drive everyday when the 5 series is not enough of a statement for you. Just my opinion so feel free to discagree...it's actually interesting to see how everyone's opinions on this thread are completely different which just tells you that there will never be unanimous view on bangle's designs.
does anyone know if he designed the x5 and x6? |

I predict the Bangle era cars will go down as one of the most enduring and fresh designs that BMW has ever produced.
Looking even further into the future, the E9x M3 and possibly the E8x Z4M have the potential to be coveted collectables due to their styling, power, and because the Z4M has the privilege of being the last car powered by the finest engine BMW will ever manufacture, the mighty S54B32. |
