E92 M3 Oil Consumption

After getting my 1200 mile service last week, I had a chance to speak with the Master Tech who works on my cars, and I asked him how much oil can I expect my M3 to burn through. He said “you can expect to add a quart every 700 to 900 miles.” Are you finding this to be true?

That's not normal at all. They say 15,000 mile oil changes and at that rate you would be completely dry at 1/3 of that. Your SA is a moron. My 7 series with 225,000 only burns a quart every 1200-1500.

Track events would probably be more like every 200 miles!

I guess it is because the M3 REVs at 8400 RPMs. I think it will do something like 90 mph in 3rd gear.

Also, it wasn’t my SA, it was my BMW MASTER TECH, and I think he should know.

From what I understand the M3 motors burn a quart of oil every 5k miles....as a general rule of thumb from what i hear anyways...

Not sure what you're trying to prove. It seems like your "master tech" is rather misinformed. My S2000's redlined not at 8400 rpms, but at 9000 rpms and they would consume less than a quart of oil every 3000 miles.

If burning a quart of oil every 2-3 tanks of gas (700-900 miles) was acceptable, gas stations would already have oil pumps next to their gas pumps

If your M3 is consuming a quart of oil every 700-800 miles, take it back, because it is defective.

I think your BMW master tech is correct. That would be the worse case sernario for oil consumption.

Since you are past the 1,200 mile service... I would take your M3 out for a nice long drive. Make sure everything is fully warmed up. Then take the revs up in 3rd or 4th gears. Do a few light loads - in 3rd gear up to read line. Or better yet... first say to 5K, 6K, 7K, 8K... drive in 3rd until those rpms... then let the engine coast down in gear. Doing this three or four times and your engine will be fully broken in.

Reving the engine high rpms and then letting it coast down in gear is good for the long term life of the motor (when the engine oil is fully warmed up!). Doing this when the engine is new - will break it in. You always want to vary the rpms and load of the motor. This will seat the rings and valves inside the motor.

I would not get too upset with some oil consumption for the first 10K miles or so. After that... your engine shouldn't use much oil. But then again... I wouldn't be going with BMW long OCI(oil change intervals) anayway!!!

The tech is quoting what BMW has traditionally allowed: 1 ltr every 1,000 km.

My experience with my S54 2002 M Coupe was more like 1 ltr every 3,000 miles (note unit difference). As best as I recall anyway.

My S65 2010 M3 still shows max oil after 2,000 miles but it has no dip stick either.

Neither call was tracked although they were occasionally driven hard, compared to a non-M motor.

I had a '98 Prelude that burned a quart every ~1,000 miles or so. Apparently it was a common problem with that engine because of the newer variable valve timing. When the engine was colder, you could actually see it burning oil from the exhaust color. Luckily I sold the car before it led to any more problems - thank you trade-in.

ITS BS.... i add a quart if i wait the 15k miles but i did that just once... i do my oil change the 1st 7k miles and ill have them to the other half no problem whatsoever.... i know people that have the M and waiting the 15k miles mark they usually have to add a quart of oil

That's ridiculous. No way you'll be going through that much oil! I have 15K miles on my car and i haven't added a drop of oil in over 3 months(4k miles).
