Tire Pressure Light Phantom

On my way home from work yesterday my tire pressure light came on. It was really cold last night (34F) so I thought maybe it was just the cold weather. So i continued to drive on home and thought it would come off. It Didnt! Now im getting kind of paranoid because im thinking I ran over a nail or something and having to replace the run flats is gonna be a hassel. I even stopped the car let it rest and started it up again and still the message would come up.

So this morning i woke up expecting to call my dealership about the light and it vanished. Needless to say i am very happy it came off but has this happened to anyone of you guys and how frequently?

I'd guess you are right at the threshold of low pressure in the tires. Have you checked them, cold? Not just the tires, but in the current frigid weather?

I agree...you are probably right at the threshold. Check the pressure with the tires cold and reset TPMS.

By the way, you do not have run flats.

Have you checked your tire pressure? You know, with one of those pokey little thingys that you actually check the tire pressure with?
Would you really take it to the dealer based on the electronic indication without checking it yourself, and if needed, you know, actually add a little air to your tires? And WTF are you talking about runflats?

Yup, another SA not going over that WHOLE car again with the customer, who is the one paying good money for his "service".

With cold temp the tire pressure will go down. I guess your TP is low. Check and reset.

Not defending SA's, but does someone really need an SA to tell them to check their tire pressure? It should be checked periodically anyway, but if your warning light comes on, then... uh, check your tire pressure and, uh... if you need air, add some. This isn't rocket surgery or brain science.

Garage List
2010 BMW M3  [4.33]
I just had a very similar issue but an error message came up saying I should "reset" my TPMS. It was weird because it happened twice so far. Once I reset it, everything was ok.

Sorry, I was not clear.....I was talking about the run flat tires the OP talked about.

Got it. Cool.
Don't mean to be harsh on the OP, but if he's paranoid about the condition of his tire yet it doesn't occur to him to check the pressure himself and his first instinct is to call the dealership, and he thinks he is riding on runflats, maybe this isn't the car he should be driving.

Yeah, that myth of runflats on the M3 just won't die. Maybe we should make a sticky. I think I will.

For the OP, definitely check your tire pressure with a handheld air gauge. It's easy, it gets you down by the tire where you can take note of the condition of wheels, tires, and brakes, and it is more precise and reliable than relying on the idiot light.

As noted above, you are probably right on the borderline of where the alert comes on, and the colder temps push it over the edge.

TPMS systems do seem to give random warnings every now and then, so sometimes you just reset the TPMS and it goes away. But don't assume that a warning is false. Check your pressure manually at all 4 corners when you get a warning. Then you'll know what the real story is.

You are far from the only one who as gotten this mis-information from someone at a BMW dealer (who really should know better). I did make a sticky for it, because I'm sure you won't be the last one who hears that bit if wrong information.
