M3 vs. 1M : Let's talk performance

Okay, so we all have seen the new 1M video a few days before BMW's official reveal. We have some idea of what's under the hood, but this new 1M could be a game changer presenting itself as a less expensive, lighter and potential faster rival to the M3.

In some respects, it's apples-to-oranges given the differences in engine architecture, but it may split the market in high-performance lightweight BMW racers.

All the money in the world, which of these two cars (the M3 or the 1M) would you choose and why?
(Value-for-dollar responses please stay home.)

M3 is a better all around car. But I'm biased, because I really don't like turbo engines. If you're into light, nimble track car, I'd get Z3/Z4 M Coupe or an E30 m3 (if we're talking about bimmers).

Lol. Hey guys. I sharpened the question a bit. We're discussing M3 vs. 1M. Not just any cars.

Oh and it kinda sucks that you can't even say M1...

But at least it will have low-end torque

I'd be interested in the suspension and build. 335 is a pretty fine car, but loses out on suspension and drive train. 135 is already pretty fast, but noted for terrible understeer in turns. In my book the 1M will have to prove a lot before it challenges the M3. But then I have a new M3 so I'm biased.

Porsche 918 Spyder. yes, it's a concept, but word has it that it's going into production.

Back to the question regarding M3 vs. 1M...
my pros and cons are as follows:

M3 pros: V8, sound, roominess, DCT, ZCP, EDC, hood hump and vents
M3 cons: fuel efficiency, price

1M pros: lightweight, torque, fender design, price, low-tech nature
1M cons: functionally only a two-seater, turbo inline-6

Overall, I must also agree on a biased leaning toward the M3 as an all-around more evolved driving machine.

Thought you said not to factor in price.

From the reviews that are already online, they say the M3 is still faster and handles better than the 1M. So if money isnt a factor then M3 for me.

Listed price as a factor, but not discussing "value." Wouldn't want to get into such analyses as dollar/BHP.

Regarding speed, I've heard conflicting news on that front. I would imagine that the 1M could give the M3 a run for its money stock to stock.

Can anyone else speak to the speed comparison? I can just imagine all of the Motorweek and Car & Driver reviews dragging both cars into the camera shot.

I'm not being biased here since I own an M3, but stock VS stock, the M3 will defeat the 1M in the track performance wise.

However, modifying the 1M is another story...

I will not choose between the two, but if I had a choice I will try to purchase a 1M and add it to my collection.

Owning an M3 and 1M FTW!

If you want light weight and low-tech nature, why not Z4 M Coupe?

Aside from one being N/A and one turbo, I don't see it that way at all. The size and weight of the 1 series is what most M3 enthusiasts wish the 3 series was at today and that's just being realistic. I'm sure many wish the m3 was under 3000lbs. There's now a lighter and potentially more enjoyable M car in the lineup. I know I enjoyed driving my 135i a lot more than my 335i. Until we get to drive the car, the 1m coupe's achilles heel is potentially the N54.

Where have you read that the e92 M3 handles better than the 1M? That's the main area where I'd expect the 1M to trump the e92.

+1. I'm loving everything about the 1M except the motor. After having my 335 for almost 3 years I think I'm ready to go back to a normally aspirated motor.

My reason for getting an M3 over a 1M would simply be the engine. It seems like BMW is abandoning high revving NA engines for the time being and I think I'd like to own one in a DD while I still can.

There's little doubt that an M3 would be faster over these country roads
Of course this doesnt prove much for me to say M3 handles better, so i take what i said back.

Im sure BMW will make me eat my words once i drive it.

different size, different weight, different types of engine...you just made my point.

but seriously, would any current m3 owner trade in their E9x for this (if they could only own 1car for ALL of their current driving needs)? don't get me wrong i think the 1m would make a "fun" second car, but it seems like most people are getting excited just because it is a new "m" offering (i'm actually more interested in the next m5, myself)...
